This is probably a runner's world type question but I thought I'd ask it here anyway because I like abuse...plus I'm sure some people are lurking here that are in my situation.
Just today I thought it would be cool to run in the Seattle marathon in late November. I don't really want to waste my time if I can't do it under 3:30. All you speedy, young types are probably saying: "Duh, what's the big deal?" Well, here's the catch:
I am 47. I've been running @ 20 mpw very slowly (like 9-10minute pace) the last couple months. I'm probably about 20 pounds overweight. I might be able to run a sub 6 mile if I killed myself.
Back in "the day" 30 years ago I ran a bit of track and had the "speed" to run sub 2 for 800m I didn't compete for a team in college but did fart around one summer then and got up to 60mpw including a 20 mile run and a low 26:?? 5 miler. This probably has little relevance to my current situation, but it shows that at one point I could do some mileage.
So, is this goal of a first time marathon in 3:30 possible in a little over 5 months? How would I go about training for it?
I'm thinking I would build from 20mpw up to 60mpw as soon as possible (like 5 weeks) at my current molasses slow speed and then start worrying about running faster and lengthening one run a week.
