High Mileage in Performance Shoes

I run 100-110 miles per week and usually do the bulk of my training in moderate weight trainers (Asics Landreth, Nike Pegasus). I have been doing some of my runs lately in more light weight trainers (Asics Speedstar and DS Trainers) and really like the faster feel and lighter weight.

My stride is very efficient but my weight is just average (5'8" 142 lbs). No joint or overuse injuries.

I am thinking of moving more of my normal runs (maybe 10 of my 13 runs per week) to these light weight trainers.

Are there any other high mileage guys out there who run most all of their mileage in light weight trainers (sub 10 oz). Any advice or things I should watch out for?

I fit that description. I run 110-120 per week. I do my easy runs in lightweight trainers, and my workouts, warmups, and cooldowns in racing flats. Actually, if I try to wear normal weight shoes I get injured.

You'll be fine. You just need to make every effort possible to seek out soft surfaces, even if it means running lots of little 1 or 2 mile loops to get in 14-mile easy runs.

My mileage is lower than yours (typically ~ 75 mpw, but in some stages of training more like 80-100) and I do all of my mileage in Adidas Adizero PR and Nike Streak XC, both a fair bit lighter than 10 oz. I'm heavier than you for my height (5'7" 145 lbs), but also with an efficient stride (I think so anyway). For me, the key to staying out of danger was a long, gradual transition into these lower profile, lighter shoes. I went from 100% trainers to ~ 100% flats over about 3 years. Not intentionally - I just loved the way the flats felt, and wore them more and more until now I don't own any shoes heavier than about 6 oz.

Thanks for bringing that up. That is one of my potential problems. On average of my 13 runs per week I usually have to do 8 or 9 of them on the road. The other 3-4 runs are either on a rubberized track or on trails. I may be able to squeeze out 1 or 2 more of those on trails over time.

I do get my long run on trails most of the time.
