I don't understand the utility of wearing gps watches or devices while running in the environments most of us run in. I ran with a local running group last week - typically only run on my own - and ran a 6 mile loop with them that had innumerable twists and turns. In any event, trying to make small talk at about the 5 mile mark, I mentioned that well, we were likely at the 5 mile mark, with about a mile to go. This caused the whole lot of them to check their GPS watches, and fiddle with them for the next quarter mile, only to determine, voila! We were (as in 500 yards ago) within 100 yards of the five mile mark, meaning that a lifetime of running and decent geographical sense works just fine in place of some gadget to mindlessly wonk about. The one guy without a gps watch guessed we were at three mile mark!! Remind me not to run a marathon with this guy. I know this touches upon some of the debates between real runners (and I am a former real runner) and the Runners World types, but having accumulated a bit of wisdom over the years, at the time just kept quiet over the incident.
It is likely good for our sport to enthuse the gadget wearers/buyers of needless technology and gimmicks, but it is irritating. I assume that others agree?
