What is the fastest split/relay split ever recorded for a 1200?
What did El G go through 1200 in during his 3:26?
In his prime, if El G ran the 1200...what could he have run?

Nick Willis ran 2:48 (2:49?) @ Penn in '03
El G went thru 1200 in 2:48 in a race (i do not remeber which one).
El G went through 3/4 mile in I think high 2:47's, and of course in his 1500 he averaged a hair under 2:45 1200 pace.
i was wondering this exact same thing the other day. i think they should have more meets where they run odd races like this. i think it would create more interest in the sport. imagine races like the 600m outdoor or 1200m or something like the 4000 would be interesting.
TFN has a 1200m progression list:
http://trackandfieldnews.com/archive/at_1200_enroute_m.html
ElG split 2:46.34 in his 1500m WR, but also split 2:44.75 in a WR attempt in 2002.
so...that's about high 54s for three 400s.
Not bad.
Lewis Johnson had a memorable quote during one of those two races. He remarked that El Guerrouj would ask the meet directors for rabbits to come through in 2:46, but that he was the only one in the world who could do it.
A Villanova athlete ran a 2:47 1200m during in the late 70s at the Penn Relays.
Close but no cigar. Don Paige split 2:50.3 in 1980 a second ahead of Georgetown and two ahead of Penn State. Belger may have run 2:50 or 2:51 a few years earlier, but no one from Villanova ran 2:47 in the 70s
The top 100 fastest 1200m times ever are time trials run by Alan Webb at his local h.s. track.
EL G through in 2:46 in Sevilla in 99 I believe!!!

trying this :
you can get an estimate of hicham's 1200m race potential ( & also 1100m race, as that's the distance to the bell _
for 1200, you'd have to try the range of distances either side of it : 800 & 1500
for 800 i'd try 1'42.5 - 1'43.5 & for 1500 : 3'25.0 - 3'25.5 ( he was worth faster than 3'26.00 as he was too slow at bell & came home in ~ 53.8 )
range of estimates for 1100/1200 off
1'43.5 / 3'25.5 ->
~ 48.4 , 2'26 .6 , 2'41.2 , 4'41.0 , 7'16.3 , 12'38.1 , 26'40.2
1'42.5 / 3'25.0 ->
~ 47.5 , 2'25.7 , 2'40.4 , 4'41.2 , 7'18.26 , 12'45.2 ,
27'04.5
i'm strongly leaning to latter line - somewhere about 2'40 looks his 1200 potential

I've noticed in every single calculation you make, you assume the runners are worth faster than their actual PB's. 53.8 is actually not that much of a neg. split for El G considering his average pace was 54.9. Do you really think EL G didn't max out his potential in the 1500, a race he ran HOW many times in peak condition? Witness his record attempt where he came through in 2:44, how did that turn out? Maybe being slightly slow at the bell worked for him, maybe it didn't, but you can't know. Its just been irritating me that everyone of your posts assumes the runner could run a lot faster.
If Coe had concentrated on 1200 race I think he would have been ideally suited for the event. I think he could have done the 2:42 range. Ovett likely only a tick behind him.
Ngeny/Coe were the men for this. Ngeny ran 2:11.95 for 1K and 3:43.4 for the mile. Coe ran 2:12.18 for the 1000, and 3:29 for the 1500. El G, Cram, Morceli, and even J. Cruz and Baala would be good at the event as well.

it's called energy efficiency, but if you think 2'32.2 + 53.8 are perfect splits for 3'26.0, more power to you
( btw, he finished that 2'44 rieti split with a high 3'26 - he did state that at 1200 he felt he was on for high-3'24/low-3'25 ( he wanted to "komen it" ) but it just didn't happen ( we don't have the 400/800 splits to tell us - someone may provide them )
Ryun ran 2:46.9 for his last 1200 on dirt in his 3:33 WR race. To think that was 40 years ago and no one has really run that much quicker on fatser tracks is pretty dam amazing.
there's been huge speculation over that race in last coupla years - it's been conjectured anywhere between 2'46 - 2'48
the wr progression book was questioned
seeing as no video around, someone with '67 t&f news may help
