As many of you might know, Ohio University made the decision last year to eliminate the track and field program. However, OU still has a Cross Country team and the distance runners are allowed to compete in open track meets during the indoor and outdoor track seasons.
Over the past several months, the Ohio Cross Country team has organized several fundraising events to help pay for these open track meets and the expenses – travel, gas, meals – that come with competing.
On Saturday, May 24th, the Ohio Cross Country team will host the inaugural Ohio Sunset Distance Classic to help raise money to go towards our “track” season. This event is an open meet available to all ages and times and will be run under the lights at the Goldsberry Track on the campus of Ohio University. The meet entry is $10 and scheduled races include: the 800m, Mile, 3000m Steeplechase, and the 5000m. There will be a post-meet party at 52 West State Street (across from Athens Middle School) for all of the participants.
Our goal for this meet is to create a fun environment with competitive races. Also, feel free to pass along this information to anyone you might know who would be interested in running this race or donating money to our fund.
Please help the distance runners at Ohio as we continue to pursue our running goals.
Thank you for your help and we hope to see you in Athens soon,
