No expert here, but if you are lifting weights with the idea of improving overall fitness and your running, then I think free weights are the way to go, as you are also using your core to balance yourself when doing them...I dont do a lot of weights, just 2x a week I do a bit of free weights and core, and the only machine I use is the pull up tower as I cant do those by myself (yet)
I only work out twice a week too, but half of one of those days is dedicated to legs. I do mostly free weights or exercises with the bar, but for legs I pretty much have to use the machines. Do you feel the tower really helps? I can do about 12 palm-inwards pull ups at one time, but I would really like to improve that. I noticed once I started working out my chest and shoulder and back I don't slouch as much at the end of a run.
