I admire many of the contemporary top runners just as admired those in the early 1980s who are mysteriously being defamed here. It's not like one has to choose.

Boston wasn't hot when Beardsley ran 2:09... (just kidding! read that thread too...)
Re Grandma's early 80's. I still cry like a baby when I recall standing alongside the road in 50 degree, tailwind, foggy conditions and watching my training partners sail to pr's. What was I thinking?
(Climate Change has made G'mas a true Summer race.)
If you do just a little reading: "Duel in the Sun" you will learn that Salazar and Beardsley were not the same after their epic race in Boston. Salazar suffered heat complications that persisited throughout his career and Beardsley would fight injury for the rest of his.
Remember Salazar has PRs of 13:11.93 and 27:25.61. I would say the 10k time is more than equal to a 2:08 marathon. Don't forget that he was also the best in the world for a few years.
you may be right and by right i mean absolutely dead wrong.

Which year did he get that Olympic Gold (the way that we decide the best in the world)? Thanks for playing.

That would be 1981 & 1982. Since the olympics is once every four years your point makes no sense.
True it really does make no sense.
But then again, having a point that made sense would not allow our spelling-challenged friend to make his cool zinger of a comment, would it?

For one, Salazar never refers to himself as the former WR holder.
This is not true. He states it over and over again in his books.
