Are you saying going into 2004 he didn't hold any because Bekele got the 5k on May 31st of 2004 and the 10k on June 8, 2004.

im a collegiate tracc star, thank you very much.
ive been out of highschool for a couple of years. my times and my mentallily only keep improving.
I saw something on an Oregon track board a few weeks ago about the possibility of two world record attempts the night before Pre. This was abviously one of them. If you read the release on the Pre website, it sounds like the time was agreed on (I'd assume in conjunction with Bekele/Hermens) after reviewing a lot of data. I don't think they told Bekele the race is at 9:30, and asked if he would he like to show up and go for a record?
My opinion:
This is home turf. The heart of US distance track running. The most knowledgeable fans this side of the Atlantic. I think one or more brave souls should step on that line...give it everything they've got for the first 5k and hang with Bekele and then try like hell to hang onto a decent pace.
Chances are you will get a standing O from the fans for having the guts that PRE had (if not the talent). You guys just have to roll the dice and go for it...like Todd Williams did during 95 WC 10k. The announcer himself said Todd might have had a better chance at holding them off if he had gone 65s instead of 62-63s, but that's another story.
Chances are you will die..but you may learn how to deal with pain like never before. You may get lucky and snatch a PR. Most importantly, you will gain confidence for having been able to keep up with Kenny for that long.
I just hope everyone is prepared to see about 10 minutes of this race on TV....How dope would 10 minutes be???
remember kemboi who "only" had a 13'00pb & ran 26'30
it's not entirely impossible that a guy with ~ 13'10 current pb may get pulled to 27'00 if he paces himself appropriately

Teg can do that. I don't see any problem there.
Right, with a PR of 13:04 he would be in his complete comfort zone rabbiting a 13:06 for the first 5K.

I never thought a morning race (9:30am in this case) was optimal. Maybe its just me, but every single one of my best track races were at night. Early races just dont feel natural for all out efforts.
Hopefully it works for him
Europe and Ethiopia are 11 hours ahead meaning 9:30am will feel like 8:30pm.
Dream on. I say maybe they show the first lap (or just the start), show Bekele going to the lead, and then go back for the last 400-600 meters. Three minutes of the race, tops, and that assumes that KB actually runs it and finishes it.

and for the record i am a willis fan not a webb fan
Well, that's you. I for one, like many many other track fans, am thrilled at the prospect of seeing the fastest 10,000 meters EVER RUN BY A HUMAN BEING, the very history of our sport being shaped before our eyes, in Eugene. And the fact that you would even declare that you are a "Willis fan" and not a "Webb fan" further illustrates that you are a complete tool.
The guy must be trolling. It is not possible to be a fan of distance running and say there is no excitement in a WR attempt.
Does KB realize that Hayward often has a brutal headwind on the backstretch? I'd love to see it but seems like a poor choice to shoot for a distance WR.
I have to say, this ain't gonna happen. Happy to eat my words but no way.
do not underestimate the power of the dark side of the force......don't be surpirsed if those winds magically disappear around 9:15am....

Vinny will yell those winds into submission.
Im up for rabbitting the first km...
Did you watch worl cross? To say that Bekele is at a plateau tells me you do not know a thing. He crushed everyone, Even after he lost his shoe! Also, he set the two mile WR indoors this winter. He might not break the WR at Eugene, but it willbe the summer of Bekele
I'm curious what the crowd will be like. I wonder if you'll need a ticket to get into the 10k. I'm assuming so, as I doubt they want to clear the stands, but the rest of the meet doesn't start until 12:30. With that much time maybe they will clear the stands. It would be nice to give anyone that wants to show up a chance to watch the 10k.
My guess is that they'll have some sort of exhibition races, or something to fill the time. They will want to have the stands packed at 9:30, and have no incentive to try and re-fill them again when the rest of the races start.
If we could get The Fam to show up, he's got the craziness to give it a go and hang on to Bekele as long as possible. Could be 8 laps.....could be 23.

I have surprised that no one has brought up the fact that his 5k SPLIT will probably be faster than the winning time of the meet's open 5k!
Chances are it will, considering only the only 5k being run is the women's race.

I'd also like to add that the race is at 9:30 because there is absolutely no wind then, that was a big factor.
