I'm not talking about hard packed fireroads, I mean sketchy single track, mud, bushwacking, etc.
X-C racers, flats, light trail shoes???

i don't wear shoes. stop being a pU$$y and go barefoot!
EXTREME!!!!!!!!
I just ran the Zane Grey 50k in Inov8 250s. Those trails were covered with manzanita brush on both sides and rocky as heck and the shoes worked fine.
I wear Mizuno Precisions for races. I've done 100 Milers in them. I've also worn them in a 100k that was pretty rocky and rugged. I've never had a problem racing in them on tough trails. I use them as my training shoe on roads but when I do trail training runs sometimes I'll put on some trail shoes just to save on wear and tear on the Mizunos. What I usually do is get as many training miles out of them as possible and then give them a farewell run in a trail race. Often they will go strait from the finish line to the trash because the trails will tear them up.
I like the New Balance 790's a lot. They're a nice combination of minimalism and trail support.
I also love the NB 790s. They're even lighter than the inov8 250s. I wore the 790s for the Leona Divide 50 miler last month, and they worked great. And that race is mostly on single track. I plan to wear them for a couple 100s this summer too.
I love the 790's. Ran a semi off road half a couple of weeks ago and they were great.
I would probably put a slightly beefier insole in them if I was going longer on rougher ground. Just for a little insurance.
The traction is also very good and they have a "rock stop" layer in the sole.
My newest, favorite running shoe...La Sportiva Crosslite.
yes definately go with the NB 790s. I am on my fifth pair. I love these shoes for trails and regular roads.
I've really liked the Saucony Kilkenny flats-- versatile enough for on and off-road running and lighter than traditional trail shoes.
Another vote for the NB 790s. Very, very comfortable shoe. The cushioning in the forefoot didn't last long though.
i like the NB 790s but worry about the heel height. My INOV8 250s are the most cushioned shoe I run in. i usually run in nike cc waffle flats and switched to the 250s. are the 250s and 790s comparable?
Anyone use Nike Free's?
yes, the precisions are my trail shoe as well
Anton Krupicka (minimalist ultrarunner) is sponsored by New Balance now and trains and races in the 790. I've heard people say that he still cuts some of the heel off of them, though, in order to make them even more low profile. Extremely light shoe (sub-8 oz) for a trail shoe.
I wear flats (zoom streak xc's) in trail races. However, I've been on some really rocky trails before where it would hurt too much to wear flats in a race. Single-track trails aren't necessarily a problem, as long as you can see your footing. Otherwise, I might go with my regular ds trainers.
On the other hand, wearing flats makes me a little bit extra careful about where I step, so this probably slows me down some.
XC flats when it's dry and spikes in the mud. You can do any mileage and any terrain. Leave off the socks for even better feel, although the shoes get extremely stinky.
another vote for the precisions.
NB 152's. Not the best in thick mud, but has worked fine for everthing else. 400+ miles and still cushy and holding up well for a 5.5 oz shoe. Just ran a trail 50k and they worked great. Tried the 790's but gave me bad shin splints for some reason.
