Weight and Diet are important\dangerous issues in running…
When I first started running I quickly lost a lot of weight, my family was very concerned that I had an eating problem. My mom took me to my doctor to make sure that I was ok... Fortunately for me.. my doctor was a runner. We talked about my diet and my workouts and he said that I was fine.
There is already a danger in our society that makes females feel like they need to be too thin. There is an interesting Kara Goucher interview on FloTrack called “Eat a Dorito”.
For most people a diet is something that helps someone to lose weight… when a diet can also be something that can be an important part of your training. How and what you eat can affect the quality of your workouts and your body’s ability to effectively recover and get stronger before your next workout. When you are running over 80 miles per week and doing national\world class workouts… it is easy to eat just about anything… and feel like you do not need to worry about what you eat BUT now that I am older I no longer feel that way.
I have a BMW and BMW only recommends that I put gasoline with a high octane in it. If you put in the cheaper gas with lower octane… you do not get the same performance out of the car. Is that concept really different from a runner that is training to be national\world class athlete and their diet?
I remember reading Eat to Win back in the 80s… And trying to incorporate some of it into my diet, but it is very hard to do when you are cooking for one and could not find all of the ingredients at your local supermarket. The City Market supermarket in Alamosa was great but back in the 80s… it did not have the same selection as a supermarket in a major city. Now I live near DC and have several Whole Foods within 5 miles of me. And the popularity\competition of Whole Foods has caused the other supermarket chains in my area to carry a better selection of nature\organic foods. This makes it very easy to eat right. I am not sure about the current selection at City Market’s Alamosa location…
If I could go back 20 years and do something differently… One of the things that I would change would be my diet. I would focus on eating better.
Ps.. I am down to only one BMW now and have been driving my Honda Hybrid more than my BMW.
