I don't know whether he is on drugs or not and I wouldn't like to speculate about ANY athlete in the current track & field climate. However, him changing from doing 400 training to what really is 100 training with a massive increase in gym work is going to change body shape. It would depend on the athlete as to what degree it does.
I did a similar change in training which involved almost a doubling in the amount of gym work and believe me, my body changed dramatically. I can assure you I'm not on drugs. So I would say it's not indicative. At the end of the day, the problem is that no one knows until someone is caught.
Plus hes very young still.
Look at that video again..
It sure as heck looks to me like he started to pull up at the very end.
Maybe it's me and it's early, but I have looked at it a couple of times now!
The guy ran 20,1 as a 16yr old. That says is all. I don't know his coach, but his manager is legit.
Good-bye US 4x100m gold?
Why the hell is everyone talking about his shape changing!
Of course he's going to fill out from a 16 year old to a 21 year old. He was a world class sprinter years ago with all kinds of potential and consistent improvement. Did any of you physically develope from 16-21?
He's not especially big for a sprinter anyhow. He's 6"5 < 200lbs.
What do you think Shalane is on? Kim Smith?

Nonsense. Even an untrained male who is a genetically geared to gain mass will only gain about 1-1.5lbs a month "naturally" in his first year of lifting.
That's like saying Barry Bonds could get huge in his mid/late 30s because "he just recently took up weight lifting".
Alan
What are you on about? His body hasn't changed much at all. He is still pretty skinny for a sprinter. The photo on the IAAF website is misleading. I have seen other photos of the race and he looks just the same as he did last year. The guy is scary. I think he will go down as the greatest athlete that has ever lived. He is still going to do great things. He is a freak of nature and it is a privilidge to watch him run.
aron- That is what I'm saying. There are no gross signs of huge developement in his physique. He's just super talented. I'm saying there is no basis for people judging his build and concluding that it must be drugs. He's NOT an overly developed 21 yr old. He had hamstring problems last year but prior to that he was one of best sprinters in the world over 200m at 19 yrs age!
I wont be suprised if he runs 19.5 this year
Titan, sorry I shouldn't have posted my message in reply to yours as we are actually talking along the same lines. I should have replied to one of the other posters who are talking as if Bolt put on a lot of bulk. Apologies.
A good wind-assist, an unusually decent start, and a relaxed and confident athlete in superb condition and you get a two-tenths improvement; no need to speculate about performance enhancers, or a timining malfunction. I hand-timed the video of the race myself and he came in 9.5-9.6.
I hope he can do it again, when the heat is on. Knowing Asafa Powell or Tyson Gay is in the next lane might tighten up a 21-year-old.
By the way, Gay ran a spectacular 200 in 20.00 flat with little competition. He just cruised along, smooth as silk. I wish he would've been in that 100. We might have a new world-record holder just now.
believe that is not a little island look at the other islands around the caribbean and tell they little...but none the less props to usain cuz thats crazy for someone his height and youth to be such a great short sprinter
Yo Yo, they be little

Not true. Some men can gain mass much more quickly than this. One study conducted in the 70s on former Mr. America bodybuilder Casey Viator showed that he gained 60+ pounds of muscle inside of 30 days, and he was not on drugs.

Is the IAAF picture photo-shopped?

I would definitely pay to see Shalane on Kim Smith. If you know what I mean.

tyson wouda probably struggled - you say he cruised the 200 & if he'd run the 100 against a bolt who he wouda probably regarded as no more than a 10-flat guy, he'd probably have taken a fairly relaxed view beforehand , aiming for no more than about 9.95 effort, believing that was more than sufficient for the win, & may not have had the mindset to adapt instantly when bolt "charged" thru after 50m & left with egg on his face

Oh man, you must be kicking yourself now. It's okay. Hindsight is 20/20. Always bet on Bolt.
