Just got back from my run today and pulled out an inch long nail out of my shoe.
Anyone ever had this happen to them? Did you notice it right away?

Never a nail, but I often have to pull a large rock out of my shoe's sole. I run in a Mizuno, I can't remember which, but it has a HUGE "hole" on the bottom. Because I wear a 12, rocks about the size of an egg can get stuck...
Being a major forefoot runner I usually don't notice until I stop and hear it scrape on a hard surface, or take my shoes off.

Holy shit, Mizuno Wave Alchemys? I run in those, and when I'm on a gravel trail I'm constantly pulling rocks out! Drives me crazy!
I noticed it right away when it happened to me in Florida. Fortunately that rusty nail didn't break skin but it went right through my shoes. I didn't need pliars to pull it out but it was some industrial type nail not those tiny things you get at the hardware store.
I had 2 in the past. One is a small one and I did not realize until after I removed the shoe after the run, which did nothing other than a hole in the outsole.
The other time, it went through the shoe, sock and the skin, but before more damage was done to my foot, I felt it and hopped on the other foot until stopped and have it pulled out - it was 3 inch long with about 1 inch still hanging out and I just pulled it out with hand and check my foot to make sure it is OK and continued to finish the run. I guess because I was running on soft surfaces, so the other end of the nail get pressed into the dirt, instead of punch a hole on my foot.
5 in each shoe, usually.

Wow, that wasn't "usual" for me.
One of the (very few) good things about not having been able to run for many years is that I have ten toenails simultaneously. This was hardly ever the case when I was training seriously.
