Alright guys - I know there are a few people here who really support doubles, and others who don't. Bottom line is that with my work schedule I have to. I am starting to get back up to some mileage numbers that I want to be at: 50's and now pushing 60's and 70's. The catch is that I am double 4-5 times a week with usually a 3.5 mile loop every morning and then another 4-5 at night with about a 45-60min lift M-F. Only exception is I'll drop a long run in Wednesday (12-15 miles at night and no lift) and one the weekends like a longer workout that totals 12 or 13 miles and another day of like 7,8,9 however I feel.

I am not asking whether or not to do doubles, as I enjoy them and they are a necessity with my schedule, but how should I go about A) comparing the mileage to my collegiate totals of about 80-90 a week and B) how should I up my mileage: i.e. gradually both mornings and evenings so I'm running say 6 and 6 or just the evenings so I'm running 3 and 9?

I'm sort of just training to train right now and will figure out what it is for when I get there - most likely a quality 10k and gear up towards a 'thon one day. I'm 23 and want to get some fast 5K and 10K on the roads before I completely abandon them.

I'd leave the 3.5 alone, and up the pm runs, unless your schedule works better otherwise. It helps a lot to have at least one run that's really easy, does require a lot of time/focus. Plus if and when you start doing workouts you won't have to change your mileage schedule to fit in a longer 10k oriented workout.

ps. why all the weightlifting? can't run with your arms you know.

My original thought was to get more upperbody strength the correct way. I do a lot of high-rep, low rest circuit type lifting. I understand you can't run with your arms, but having a strong core, back, and arms allows for much more powerful running. Without putting on weight why not increase strength? I'm not saying lifting is for everybody, but the pattern I have found is working: Back and Bi's M&TH, Chest and Tri's TU&F, 5 exercises each section (10 total for a workout) with 3 sets of 12 or more reps. The weight isn't so light that I can do a lot more than the 12, it is to the point that I can do 12 reps, take a minute or so between to do a set of abs, regroup and repeat this 2 more times. I watch it carefully and when I get into my full load of training I will probably drop the weighlifting altogether, but for now it serves its purpose without interferring with my running (gaining size and weight).

That or its a great way to get cut for the ladies with the summer months coming up.

Back to the original topic: would most agree to keep the one shorter run and increase mileage only on the 2nd run? And next step, should these shorter morning runs be kept very very easy, or should I keep them honest and keep the "easy" days as evening runs?

IMHO: lift less, run more. Murray halberg won olympic gold with a crippled arm. I think lifting is eating up all of your time and preventing you from running more.
