Forgot to throw in some advice there, my bad. Speed is developed later in the cross season, not through lifting, but through hard workouts.
You can get more comfortable traveling fast by incorporating tempo runs in the second half of your summer training season, but it's too early in the cycle to begin "sprint workouts"(repeats is the runner word...).
Your body should not be put through two hard seasons in a row, either you do summer and winter as your main season, or you join the rest of us with the fall-spring-combo. Don't get me wrong, go ahead and race in the summer, just be sure you know it's far from the be all end all, and focus more on enjoying the sport at that point.
Strength will though help you though, and I do recommend incorporating strength work. But only do this with your own body weight. Push ups, sit ups, dips, chin ups, squats, ect. That way you steer away from inefficient bulk muscles and you work with muscles designed to your own body mass.
Best of luck to you with your season!
