I'm a long time competative runner whose running career has run its course. I'm almost thirty and after several years of good, but stagnent performance (high 14's 5K/mid 31's 10K for 3+ years) I'm ready to hang up the spikes for good and relegate running to the status of a recreational (rather than competative) pursuit. Also, after 16 years as a runners, I've also decided that I'm sick of looking like a runner (I'm 5'11" and about 145lbs), so with that in mind I've decided to take up lifting and try to gain some weight (maybe 15-20 lbs).
I still really enjoy running and don't plan to stop anytime soon even though I will no longer be training. I also really enjoy cycling, swiming, and hiking on a regular basis. I can see myself mixing up those four activities so that I am getting some kind of aerobic exercise in nearly everyday for the forseable future. This wouldn't be very strenuous exercise (think 30-40 mpw running/hiking, 40-50 mpw cycling, & 1-2 mpw swimming at relaxed paces), just enough for recreation and health. I currently run about 70-90 mpw in maybe 7-10 runs per week, with ~30 mpw cycling, 1-2 mpw swimming, and maybe 5 mpw hiking (all a very relaxed paces) between runs as recreation.
Ideally I would like to maintain the ability to comfortably cover 10 miles in the trails @ 7-7:30 pace one or twice per week as recreation. I would also like maintain the ability to run ~16:00-16:30 for 5K so that I can beat the high school kids I help coach in the annual turkey trot. However, the main goal is to build some muscle and increase strength.
So I have some questions for anyone with lifting experience:
Will I be able to bulk up a bit through lifting if I am still doing a fair amount of aerobic exercise?
Am I being unreasonable to expect to maintain a decent level of running ability when 15-20 lbs heavier?
Does anyone know where I can find some basic information about how to put together a lifting program to add 15-20 lbs?
Should I eat more or less once I stop running so much and start lifting (I don't want to add body fat)?
Thanks
