Live in SoCal. There are trails near me but they are gnarly, not going to get under 10 minute pace trails - no fun to run there. About 6 days a week, I drive to run. There is a packed bike path along the water 15 miles away. Its ok, but if I want to do any fast running this is a bad option as I will be constantly dodging bikers, swervy kids, skaters, etc.
I drive 24-28 miles to do any fast running - there are a few options along the coast in this range. One has a 3 mile long trail with soccer fields across the road from one end of it that are not being used about 1 in 20 times I go there. The other 2 options are on the road, but there is a big neighborhood to run in and a 400 foot hill (the hill area is in a park that is always packed though - the trails in the park suck to run on like the ones where I live).
I keep going further to find places to run, but inside of 60 miles I can not find any option that is on par with the 24-28 miles away ones.
I can run from home when I have to. There are boring neighborhoods to run in, bike lanes along 55 mph roads. Bike lanes with cars parked in them, and views of desert fringe hills. If I go after classes get out, there is a community college I can run around too - its a 1.5 mile loop and I get to run by locked up athletic fields and a locked up track. There are enough speed bumps in the neighborhoods and the community college that even a tempo here isn't that great.
