I guess this is a sort of ethical dilemma. I coach hs distance runners and have a really good senior girl. She's also on the 4 x 400 so the head coach sends her with the sprinting coach a few times a week.
The problem is the sprinting coach, although well intentioned, doesn't know what he's doing. We're trying to collaborate, but its not going well.
For instance, when I ask what he has planned he says stuff like, " we're doing 4 500's at 400 meter race pace." WTF?
Anyway, them sprint sessions are too much and too fast and she's at risk for injury and burnout. They also pack her week with hard days and don't allow much recovery.
Since this guy runs cluster workouts at vaguely defined intensities, they just become mob race sessions. I've advised this girl to control her pace--run way slower than the sprint guy says.
We've also worked out signals. She looks over at the distance group and I go arms folded for slow down, hands on hips for ok pace, hand on chin means it out of control so pull yourself from the workout.
I'll be honest--I kind of feel like a prick for doing this, but the alternative seems worse.
What do you think?
