Is biking a good cross training exercise for achilles tendonitis or does it aggravate the achilles like running? I really want to bike, but would go on the elliptical too if necessary.

kopid, you just need to get rid of your superAIDS, thats all.
I had achilles tendonitis for 2 years. At first it was so bad that I couldn't bike. In fact, I couldn't even walk briskly for more than a few minutes. At that point deep-water running was my only option. One of the keys to helping your achilles is to remember it will degenerate if you don't use it... make sure to do exercises to make it stronger (i.e. eccentric heel raises) Stretch several times per day, and ice at least once per day for 10 minutes. Gradually you can work your way up to elliptical & biking - even brief jogging. Another thing that helped me was seeing a chiropractor for deep massage. Good luck
alright, i've started doing the eccentric heel raises already. i don't have access to a pool though, so the deep water running isn't really an option right now
i have heard that weakness in the hips can cause pronation, how can this be fixed?
Strengthen your hip muscles. Strap a 1 or 2 pounds weight to your heels perform hip abduction, adduction, flexion, and extension. Most causes of pronation do not come from the hip, but if you do have weak hips when you run and become fatiqued this can make pronation worse.
I am just getting back running after a month off due to achilles pain. Did the elliptical and stationary bike during the time off. After about a month, I decided to try and run some even though there was still some soreness.
I think the stimulation from the running is helping it heal faster. I did 3 easy miles every other day for a week on the track then did seven relatively painfree miles on the road this past Sunday. It is still a little sore but the pain comes and goes rather than staying constant. Seems like ot is healing up. Ice and vigorous massage (with the Stick) help also. Massaging hurts at first then pain disappears. My conclusion is that complete rest is not the best treatment.
Good luck.
Do anyone have suggestions for bike workouts for those trying to recover from Achilles tendinitis?
I biked throughout the time I had achilles tendonitis. As with many injuries I've had, I could feel the injury while biking - was aware of it - but the biking did not nearly cause pain on the same level as running. I don't think it was doing additional damage, but I'm never really sure with cross-training and injuries.
Hope yours gets better soon.I've continued to do heel raises after recovering, and think they can be a good preventative tool - just monitor your pain while doing them early on and don't overdo it with those either.
