no Mike Fout was
no Mike Fout was
Nope, he won Nike Team Nationals but a good runner from Indiana, Mike Fout, just had a better day at FL.
Derrick has clearly separated himself with this performance, though.
13:55 is okay for spikes. Rexing did it in trainers.
thanks, guys. didn't pay much attention this year.
Remedial doesnt do your sh!tty posting justice
I agree. Derrick was tired by the end of cross season.
It would have been nice to see German in the race last night though...
Again, if all goes well, the 2 Mile at Nats is going to be ridiculous.
Jonsey, You Indiana shill. Just say Fout now instead of being a smartass. Fout will not run sub 14 this year.

yeah but it's not much of a high school time
exactly, Rupp's time wasn't a high school time and shouldn't be on the all time high school list. He ran it far far after he graduated. This was just a way for Rupp to get the record.

Bullsh!t. How many times does a high schooler get to run in a high-school only 5K? Track and Field News set the standard long ago that HS records could be set until a certain date (I think it's Aug 31) after graduation as long as they athlete hadn't had their 20th birthday, and there's no reason to change it.
One question: I think I remember the other races, but can someone remind me the race when Ritz ran his 13:44? Thanks in advance!

Does every month that passed get an additional 'far' when describing how long it was after Rupp graduated?
It's not as if Rupp was the first guy to do this.
Great run by Derrick! Hopefully there'll be the epic 2 mile with Derrick, Fernandez, and Puskedra at NON.

13.44.7 at USATFs in 2001, following his 13.51 at Penn Relays the same year.
Derrick is a step above even the best (Fernandez/Puskedra/Lowe/etc). 13:55 is another level. Derrick will get the 3200m record this year. The others will probably run 8:40 low...if not under. However I predict Derrick runs low 8:30...if not under! that is if he stays healthy

13:55 is another level, yes. However, consider some of the other preps who have run that fast or faster... Rupp, Ritz, Virgin, Lindgren, etc. None of them broke 8:40, so I don't know how you make the automatic extrapolation to a low-sub 8:30. On the other hand, Derrick did solo it, but Malmo would tell you that solo efforts are often the best races because one tends to get into a "zone."

I suppose there's some truth to that statement, but it's been a long time since a world record in a distance race has been set in an un-rabbited race, and certainly not one where a huge field is continuously being lapped. Maybe one of Henry Rono's records.

I'm pretty sure Fout beat all of them last winter at FL Nats. Actually I'm very sure. The same exact thing happened, people said "Oh, look at German's fast time" and "oh Derrick is saving up for Nationals so he didn't win Midwest". People considered Fout a darkhorse, and he really didn't care. He made a gutsy move at two miles that no one could cover and he never came back to them. All German's time trials and all Chris's resting pretty much went to hell.
Why are people making the same mistake and counting him out? He has proven he belongs on the national stage, I hope? You say Derrick was tired by the end of the season, well maybe he'll be tired by June from all his remarkable 5k's! Part of being a national champion is making sure you're ready to run the big one!
(this site needs an edit/delete button. Hit "post" too early on the last one)
Lets see, Derrick had just run NTN Regionals, FL Regionals on a tough course, NTN's, and was "rested".
German had run all those weeks in a row of the CIF state series and had run FL West just the week before.
Great accomplishment for Fout at FL Nationals, but most people realize FL is no longer the great race it one was, more of a "survivor" type series because of the wonderful improvements to our sport by Corporate America.
They will run the races in the spring and we'll see who's faster. I wish Mr Fout luck. Derrick's 13:55 is a truly exceptional HS performance, however he did at FL nationals
Fout is currently hurt and cross training. He should return to running within the next couple of weeks. This could put him a little behind Derrick and the others. I have to say, I doubted him all year (going back to last spring) and he proved me wrong every time. I wouldn't be surprised to see him do some damage this summer!
