yeah, it's ridiculous to think that there could be varying degrees of itbs or any other medical problem. everyone experiences all symptoms in exactly the same way for all physical problems, no exceptions.
To the OP. Nothing you are doing is really addressing the problem.
ITBS results from weakness in the hips. You need to hit the gym hard. Get your core, your hips, back, quads stronger and you'll get better.
Ignore that Patstrap crap. Also the foam roller helps but only in minor cases.
I had it for a year and everyone told me to do that stuff. Ice, heat..etc..One guy even said surgery.
Then I saw someone who actually knew what they were talking about. So I stopped trying to run, hit the gym four days a week and got it stronger. Three weeks later I was running and two months I was back to full volume. Havent had a problem since.
Look into these products and make them your religion.
Large rubber bands and a Bosu ball. Look into hip exercises with these products. Your problem will be gone in a few weeks.
Also note, you will be very sore when starting.

3. A recent study came out that found no relationship between hip strength and IT band syndrome. Previous studies that claimed a relationship claimed only a small relationship between hip strength and ITBS.
6. Remember that this injury isn't stubborn. You are. It will likely take months to heal.
These are untrue. I had ITBS for a year and could not run more than a mile without unbearable pain. I got it stronger and the pain went away.
Don't listen to these guys. See a legit physical therapist who deals with runners. They will tell you the same thing.
Any tips on how you got it stronger? What exercises...how often?
You're in luck, what gets rid it is very slow hard foam rolling of the quads (and sides), roll the sore spots. Also do lunges with your good leg forward and the bad leg at the back slightly elevated (like stepping out of your front door) and just focus on lowering the back leg and getting a quad contraction in the quad just above the weak knee. Take a multivitamin or some that helps with tendons. Sideways hamstrings stretches help.
