my question is this: unless you're an elite runner whose paycheck depends on performance, why would you care enough about running a second or two (or five in a long race) to let it stop you from enjoying one of the finer things in life?

I went 9:34 in ironman Canada after having sex three times the nght before.
Just do it, man. The release is amazing. Especially if it's with your coach. Awesome.
I say sex the night before a races is just dandy. just don't get to carried away, let her do most the work. Nothing worse them some sore shoulders and hip flexors before races.
Because seconds add up, and those seconds make us what we are...
Never understood all the fuss, use some common sense, take it light and dont pull a hammy.
Both my boyfriend and I compete (post college) and never lost "the edge" the next day or day of, for that matter.
Its a matter of sharing the work. No better way to take your mind off the race and get a good night sleep
What's with all the speculation? Science should easily be able to provide the answer.
1. Having sex drops testosterone levels for a period of time.
2. Lower levels of testosterone is bad for a race.
Bob Beamon allegedly ended his race-eve abstinence strategy the night before he broke the long jump record by two f***ing feet.
You sure about this? I would check point #1 again.
If I go 3 days without it (5 days is my all time record) I am a lot more productive and aggressive at the gym and at work. My mind is more clear and I feel more on edge in a good way. I'm on a hair trigger ready to kick someone's ass.
So yeah, abstaining at least 3 days at a time will make you a better athlete and more successful in general.
Dave Wottle was a newlywed on his honeymoon when he won the 800 Olympic Gold.
Maybe I don't understand the question, but where are you all getting goats the night before a big race?
i've never had any problems with the night before, but if it's in the same day, i don't think it works out very well. I have run plenty of good races after getting laid the night before, one of my worst races ever, me and my girlfriend decided to mess around right before we had to report to the gym for a home meet, we get down to the gym a bit late after we finish the deed, and then 2 hours later, i ran a dog slow 8k just feeling like i had no drive at all

You must have had a REALLY messed up childhood. I'm sorry.
But seriously to the OP there are studies in scientific literature asking the same question. I believe they concluded that night before is ok for males but a few hours before is not. Testosterone takes around 4 hours to recover.
It is well known that athletes in the United States are told to abstain from sexual intercourse prior to athletic competition. The rationale for such a policy appears to be related to the hypothesis that sexual intercourse decreases the athletes' ability to perform efficiently and/or maximally. But the effect that sexual intercourse may have on exercise performance has not been examined widely. Very likely, the restrictions placed on athletes have little to do with the athletes' physiological ability to substain a particular exercise intensity and/or perform maximally. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of sexual intercourse 12 hours prior to maximal treadmill exercise on aerobic power, oxygen pulse, and double product (i.e., an index of relative cardiac work). Eleven male subjects were tested on the treadmill with and without prior sexual intercourse. The results from the maximal exercise tests showed that aerobic power, oxygen pulse, and double product were not different. Therefore, the data suggest that it is justified to dismiss the point of view that sexual intercourse decreases maximal exercise performance.

Was that directed towards me? Abstaining for 3 days at a time increases my focus and energy. How exactly do you disagree with that?
I remember reading an interview where Harry Wilson was asked this question. His reply was - paraphrasing - "obviously if you are banging away for hours it could slow you down but otherwise no problem". The following week there was a joke letter to the mag from some guy wanting to join Harry's group. No interest in running fast times but wanted to be able to "bang away for hours"
