I see an anticipatory element now Tim.
I just think prior to the 'dangerous' situation, if one knows it is coming, the central governor is merely in the 'aware' state i mentioned in the above post and not the 'active' state which is taking action to slow us down. If one knows it is coming then it will take action and that action seems to me to be linear in juxtaposition to the linear line showing our reserves. Does it seem likely the CG is aware of the reserves one has. If those reserves aren't being tapped into it then it could just sit back, ala during long easy runs or everyday life.
Because it is always paying attention it can step in whenever it feels it needs to and take specific action.
I'm still pondering what specific application this will have to my coaching methodology and will let you know if i come up with anything concrete. What i think i will end up saying instead is that the great coaches or the better coaches are already tuned in on this factor and their purpose is to continually deceive it so as to push those boundaries outward. So the application of the CG could well be, if it becomes mainstream, is to alert the mainstream to some of those specific methods/concepts coaches have been using.
One thing i am going to love about the CG is it will form a more concrete link between training in a scientific sense and running in a spiritual sense. The CG to me now indicates to spend more time on the mid-zone, the mid line. As Buddha came to his enlightenment he heard a master lutist saying to his student who was putting strings into a lute. "Not too tight or it will break and not so loose as it won't play." And Buddha, who had been an ascetic monk living in the forest for 6 years, saw it wasn't in the extremes but in the center where he should now look. He looked and he became enlightened.
The central governor more strongly indicates to me that Lydiard's philosophy was focussed moreso on this center than on the extremes. The marathon base building phase, in a spiritual sense, is building your center. The stuff that comes after it is working on the extremes. But you have raised your CG ceiling through the marathon base building. Now it is at a new level and all anaerobic training can do is increase ones efficiency up to this new ceiling, not continue to raise it.
