What are some huge improvements you've seen in high school? I remember a girl in our section who was running something like 24-25 minutes for a 5k in 10th grade. In 11th grade she ran 19 minutes and in 12th grade she ran 18:10.
In 1984 teamate ran 26 something for his first 5k xc and 3 months later he places 6th in regional in VA in 16:34. Pretty crazy!

There was this girl, who, when we were both freshman, was about as plain as you could get, and she looked like a boy (before that was a desirable thing).
The summer between freshman and sophomore year was very good to her, and from them on she was widely regarded as the hottest girl in school the rest of her high school career.
So, that's the biggest improvement in high school I ever saw.
Wasn't Gary Martin a pretty poor runner early in his career and ended up running sub 4
As a freshman he ran a 2:06 800. Didn’t see any of his freshman XC results so probably didn’t start XC until sophomore year. 16:45 5k sophomore year. Not sure if I would classify his as “poor runner” as a freshman and sophomore based on those times
