Me, in 9th grade I started cross country the first week of high school. These are girl's times, and back then we only ran 2 miles.
After two weeks of practice, my first race, 18:10 for 2.x? miles (13:56 was the varsity girls winner, for reference, and she was one of the top runners in the state, so it had to be a longer race, maybe 2.25 mi)
2nd race, 13:18 for 1.9 miles. (11:18 was the varsity girls winner) The rest is history, I kept improving and my most proud accomplishment was finishing as the top freshman at the sectional because I had only started running 2 months prior!
By the end of sophomore cross country, I was in the top ten in the state; by my senior year, I was in the top 2 in the state. My eighth grade time was 7:11 for the mile. Is that a good time for an eighth grade girl? Not particularly; they probably won the state meet in 5:2x or 5:3x for the eighth grade back then (I'm guessing). We didn't have a track or cross country team in m.s., so that was just a time trial in P.E. and I only ran it once. that's why I don't think middle school times mean much.

Personally it was from XC to track season my sophomore year. Ran like 17:45 in XC and had 1600m PR of 5:15 & 11:00 3200M my freshman track season.
Sophmore Track season I went to run 4:40 & 10:00 for 1600m & 3200m I remember I trained really hard in the off season getting up to 60MPW and it paid off!

Kids can get way faster throughout high school. I remember running 5:59/12:59 my first track meet as a freshman. I was prob 5:10/11:00 as a sophomore and 4:40/10:10 as a junior. I ended up 4:19/9:19. Puberty and 4 years of hard work are a killer combo but it’s different for everyone.
