"Ran" 33 and change for my first 5k, got it down to 24 by the end of the xc season. 5:58 for the 1600 (don't remember any 3200 times, but I got a lot of pity claps). Sophomore year broke 20 on a 3-mile course and got under 5:30. Junior year ran 18 flat on 3-mile course and 4:58 and 10:40. Senior year 16:59, 4:34, 9:57.
Freshman year of college 26:10 8k, 15:03 for my first track 5k.

My first HS 2-mile (soph year in 1976) was 14:57, and by the end it was 12:03, and 10:35 when I was a senior. Nothing stellar, but I'm proud of it, and have retained my love of distance running for 30-plus years.
Bruce...Old, Slow, Happy

When I first started running I decided to do the 800m and the main training I had was PE lessons and the athletics club after school (once a week). I started training by myself on the grass field and timed an 800m, my first ever one was, I think, 3:04 on a grass track. It was definitely over 3 minutes as I remember being happy when I did a time trial in 2:58 before one of my first races. I did a few schools races then joined an athletics club. I knocked almost a minute off it by the end of it.
With the 1500m the first one I ran was I think 5:54 on a tartan track and I knocked much more off that. I ended up having longer distances as my best events but it all started with the 800m and 1500m at school.

Also, Wesley Sumner from Minneapolis Southwest went from 5:30 1600 and 11:50 3200 in 2021 track to a 16:34 5K XC and became Southwest’s 5th runner that they really needed. Sounds like a big jump to me for sure. He ran a 4:54/10:11 this outdoor season.
My team had a freshman who ran 10:50 in the 3200 as a freshman. He sandbagged all of that summer, then dropped a 15:50 his first race in xc and went on to run 9:23 as a sophomore.
First race as a freshman was 21:36 last race as a sophmore was 15:39 (hs)
