I would think that there is more to this than money. Historically, long term coach-athlete relationships have broken up, and often the reason given was that the athlete now understood himself well enough to not need the coach, or disagreed on one fundamental issue. I'm not sure that Wariner would be that self sufficient yet.

To part over 5% is poor judgment. If JW anticipates making an additional 1m this year, the additional 5% is only 50,000.

So one of the articles states that Jeremy will be coached by Mike Ford now, who is the sprints coach on the Baylor staff now. Don't forget who his boss is... Clyde Hart, and everything he does he learned basically from Clyde Hart. The transition shouldn't be difficult for Jeremy as far as training goes, he's staying in the same system. However, how messed up is Ford's and Hart's relationship going to be over this. I just can't see this working out well for the two of them at the same place at the same time. Hart says he won't coach Jeremy for less than 10% and Ford says, "Hey I'll do it for 5% and use all the knowledge I picked up from your old coach." Shady, very shady.

As far as MJ not wanting Jeremy to break his record I think you're wrong. The thing is as Jeremy's agent MJ is getting 10% of what Jeremy makes as well. Guess how much MJ gets if Jeremy breaks his record? Being Jeremy's agent is like the hand that never stops giving. MJ gets more rich and the coach who got both of them to where they are gets screwed. Thats track and field for you. The coaches get crapped on all the time.

Two world champions from last year have already left their coach (who brought them from HS stars to World Greats) this year... Kerron Clement and Jeremy Wariner. Who will be next? How will the change affect them? How much money did they save?

I think this is a pure shame as Wairner has improved ever year since he arrived on the world scene. Hart understands the event and helped Johnson to his WR's. Of course Johnson had the talent, Hart guided the talent and molded it into the fastest runner in history over 200m and 400m. Wairner had his reasons for leaving that the general public do not know about. Truly, what more does he have to prove other than obtaining the WR? He has already won the World Championships and Olympics. Sometimes a change in environment and daily routine provides a stimulus for better performances and results. The running world will only find out come August.

Wariner has not gained my respect in anything he has said or done off the track. as far as on the track... my hope is that he becomes a convicted cheat and joins the sect of numerous US cheating sprinters. i'd personally rather be a "special olympian" than a US sprinter any day, any year. is it true that he's a homosexual, as well?

I understand why people are questioning whether or not this is a smart move by Jeremy, but I don't think that it should be treated as a moral issue. It's a business decision. It happens every day outside of athletics and there are no newspaper articles about it. Hell, it happens all the time in sports as well. How many coach-athlete splits are there at the end of every football season due to inability to reach a mutually agreeable contract?

Some responses make it seem like Hart has been betrayed, and I don't think that's the case. Jeremy has no obligation to keep the conditions of the contract the same from one contract to the next. Jeremy has the right to offer what he want to offer and Hart has the right to accept or reject the offer.

That being said, this probably isn't the best move fore Jeremy and he'd probably be better off staying with Hart, but I don't know any more about the situation than anyone else here does, so I can't say for sure.

It's usually not a good idea to change something that is working, especially in an Olympic year.

If this is just about money, than it really isn't a good idea for Wariner.

For Hart, he has had a long and distinguished career, this is about pride. He doesn't need the money and he certainly shouldn't accept a demotion.

But I presume that this is not just about money. Maybe a combination of the factors mentioned in some other posts here.

Hart's legacy is already assured.

Let's see if Wariner can become a 2 time, 3 time or 4 time Olympic Champion.

I just want to see the best runners run as fast as they can.

Merrit's coach is a great coach...But he hasn't done the things with Merrit that Hart has done with Warnier..Merrit was a 45.7 400 runner in high school...Warnier was only a 48.7 high school 400 guy...he went to Baylor to play football and decided to focus on track instead..can you imagine if he hadn't we would all be over Merrit instead of Warnier..Warnier is a true great but before its all said and done Merrit could be better
