The Taliban is involved in the other mess, Afghanistan, they have nothing to do with Iraq.
And yes, we can keep something of a lid on the violence in Iraq, but only by keeping 158,000 troops in country. Yes 158,000 Americans stationed in Iraq, for no one knows how long. 158,00 is the current level, which Bush just said today may stay the same if the security situation required it. In other words, a huge amount of American forces are going to need to stay in Iraq for years and years to come. The human cost of this is huge, and the financial cost will eventually harm a already fragile US economy..
And while much of what you say about the security situation is trye, more and more Iraqis think of the US as an "occupying" country and the Iraqi political process is still at a standstill. So eventually the Iraqis are going to have to settle this themselves, Bush is just pusing the problem back, which the next President is likely to do as well.
Bring the troops home.
