There is a big difference in general body types between ITU racers and 70.3/Ironman length racers among the women.

Sorry to break it to you, but those are the female runners you're looking at.

Why are male runners chicken-chested and scrawny?

all might disagree with those 'meaty' claims. And this is just to name a few off the top of my head.

You have got to be kidding me right? "not real endurance athletes" ?????????? Have you ever even thought of doing an ironman or a 1/2 iron? 140.6 miles and 70.3 respectively.
I was a swimmer first. Then got into running when swimming just kind of became something I didn't have the time to do am and pm 2-3 hour practices for. I married a runner... University of Arkansas to be exact.
I do tris now because I enjoy them and at almost 30 there is no way I'm going to be as competitve at running as I can be at tris b/c of my swimming background.
Try training for an IM and then try to say that triathletes aren't real endurance athletes. My summer training weekends look like this:
Saturday: 90+ mile bike ride followed by about a 5-10 mile run; Sunday: 15-18 mile run in the morning; bike in the afternoon.
I put in anywhere from 35-65 miles running a week; 100-200 miles biking each week; and about 10-20k worth of swimming a week.
That is endurance training.
There are a lot of women and men who do tris for fun...they aren't the leanest people in the world, but show up at any 5k, 10k, 1/2 marathon, or even marathon and you'll see some heaftier people. Just be glad they are actually trying and not just getting fatter and unhealthier.

Are you saying that's not true for your typical local running race? I hate to break it to you, but the vast majority of women runners don't look like skinny elite runners either.

As a skinny runner guy, I can say you are correct. Most women, let alone women triathletes do not look like anorexic women runners. I myself like a top shelf, a nice round booty, and some wolf to come out of the sheep when the lights go down ...giggty giggty

I failed geometry class too.
