Well, yes, if you are a graduate (like I am) of both Cornell and Georgetown.

I'd put my dollar on Bill as he would have never let the pace dawdle along as it did over the first half. My guess is Hall would have gained ground during the second half but would not have caught him....either way it is a race that would have been fun to watch and which sadly we'll never see

Gary,
I wish I could run with you on 01.01.08 but my days of running over 10-miles are over. Achilles bursitis really limits how fast and far I can run.
DK
how about you meet me at the newton fire station to the finish? Nice easy pace.

Not really. I know Jon Anderson personally and Jack Fultz was a DC area legend (where I grew up). Neither are household names -- the exception being if you are a country music fan.

That makes no sense. Why would Hall be catching up to him? Even if he ran exactly as he did in the OT, he'd still run faster than Rodger's PB. Which is more likely, Rodgers running a PB on a tough course or Ryan completely ripping Rodgers apart?

First, correct me if I'm wrong, didn't Hall run a 1:07ish 1st half. So if he ran "exactly as he did in the OTs" he wouldn't be running faster than Bills PB would he? I think BR would have been out in 1:05ish and Hall would have never caught up to him, of course all this is hypothetical but you must admit its pretty fun to think about.
Second, I don't think Central Park is a tough place to run or race. Rolling gentle hills like in CP actually speed you up as you use different muscle groups climbing and desending with a net result of less fatigue and more speed over the distance. As evidenced by Gebs blazing first lap around CP during the NYC 1/2 in August.
just a sidenote bill rodgers turns 60 this coming sunday.

Huh? Ryan ran 2:09:0x faster than Bill Rodger's PB of 2:09:27 at Boston '79 which many are saying was wind aided. Explain to me how he wouldn't catch up?!?! It makes no damn sense. 1:05ish is slower than his eventual even pace. He would have walked him down on that head start.
Bill won 4 Bostons and 4 New Yorks and Fukola. He was also #1 in the world in 75, 76 and 77. You are damn right you can't compare!! Plus Bill ran Boston faster 2:09:27, 2 American records, Bronze at World Cross. 28 marathons under 2:15. NO COMPARISON!
Was anyone here surprised when Craig Virgin beat Bill Rodgers in 1980 Boston?...I sure was!....Virgin was no marathoner, Hall is...so the edge goes to Hall.

Historically speaking, Ryan isn't even in the same conversation right now. He's all potential right now.

EXACTLY.
Plus, don't forget - Rodgers stopped to tie his shoes and STILL ran a 2:09.
Rodgers ran to the level of competiotion. If Hall and he were the same age at the 2008 OT's Rodgers would have put him away by 21 miles.
You can't compare them, different era.
Bill raced often had to, because the money was different, the sport was different.
Ryan races three or four times per year, all he does is prep for one or two big performances a year.
If Bill had that luxury there is no telling what he would have done, if you could compare them, I'd take Bill by a mile.
Up to now, Bill by a mile.
But, then again, Ryan has the future ahead of him and he may go on to greater success.
I hope so.
Rodgers was fantastic. Let's hope Ryan can fulfill his own fantastic potential.
I'm rooting for him.

What are you talking about, London put Hall on the map better than Boston would of. No one would of cared if he would of won Boston last year in 2:14. And you can't really compare Hall and Rodgers. Hall's high school, college, and pro times are all way faster.
Most people in the US dont even know there is a London marathon.
Better (money & marketing wise) for a natural born USA runner to win Boston in a slow time, and PR in London, Rotterdam, Berlin, etc...

Yes, to me. Both attended schools I went to (Cornell and Georgetown).

Rodgers did the things that he's famous for mainly between ages 30-36. Hall is 25ish, and was much faster in high school and college than Rodgers was in high school and college. So we really need to wait and watch for about 10 years.
