Just finished a stats class, so I feel pretty confident on this one.
It doesn't take a stats class to know this, only an idiot wouldn't.

no way...if you were median, and we know people on here have run about 13:30 or faster that would make the slowest person about 18 minutes....there are much slower people than that.

That is why I used the median. A person running 23 minutes counts the same as one running 17. It is how many are above and below that matter.

A long time ago 15:20, currently 18:23. No lie.

Where is statman carothers when you need him.
Both Median and Mean are "averages."
Statistically speaking, the median has n/2 observations higher and n/2 lower (depending if there are an even or odd number of observations)
The mean has half of the combined values above, and half below. It would be the balancing point of the distribution, a visual of the pdf would give the statistician an idea of "skewness."
Medians take large numbers out of the picture. Since the fastest time a runner could report is limited (1237 being the low), and the highest number is somewhat infinite (sometimes my 55 minute 5k walker grandma posts), the median is probably a better "average" in this case.
Because the letsrun community is pretty savvy statistics wise, some confusion is no surprising. However, there are probably a lot of pricks just trying to be pedantic. Me included?
15:07 and going down in the spring I hope

two guys here:
14.07 and 14.55
question: Are we more likely to put our pb here if it is under 15.45?
