It's hard to argue with the success of the Sacramento Trials.
Attendance records from all previous Trials were smashed both in 2000 and 2004. Hotels are plentiful, airport has convenient flights all over the place, weather is ideal for both sprinting (daytime) and distance (nighttime). No chance of rain. No humidity.
While Sacramentens aren't fanatic Pre sploogers like the folks in Eugene, they have shown they are willing to support track and field and appreciate distance running (at road race--CIM, HS--CA state meet, college--NCAAs, and pro--Trials levels).
Remember, Sacramento pulled 20,000+ fans to every day of the Trials.
I'm not saying that Eugene is a bad choice, but what did Sacramento do to lose the Trials? Absolutely nothing.
At least in Sacramento fans wouldn't be fighting for $200+ rooms as the posh Eugene Super 8!!!
it's pretty obvious that you've never attended a meet at hayward field...
Did anyone actually look at the website?
seems that some hotels are waiting to open rooms up until 2008:

Let's meet up and go for a run. I hope you don't drop dead at the 5 mile marker from doping !
I called and they are all booked already. Most are price gouging 4 to 5 times the regular summer rate. I have friends who are staying at the Motel 6, I-5 Glenwood Exit, and I will bring my dads old van, we will sleep in it, and use shower in their room. I hope in 2012 they pick Sacramento or Carson has the IAAF regulation, permanent USATF National Stadium by then that we\'ve all been reading about ;-)
For those of you who want lodging info, here's some sites for you to enjoy:
Lane County Visitors Assoc. Trials Hotels List:
http://www.visitlanecounty.org/static/index.cfm?contentID=231
(some hotels won't take reservations until January 1)
Further, the Visitors Assoc. says they'd love to help you to find a place to stay. Send them an email at
or call (800) 547-5445.
Housing info for athletes:
Spectators staying in a campus dorm:
http://center.uoregon.edu/conferences/uohousing/OlympicHousing08/registration/
Also, on eugene.craigslist.org some local folks are renting out their houses or couches for the week.
Finally, you might look at Cottage Grove for hotels, it's only about 20 minutes from Eugene. Corvallis is 45 minutes away, while Salem and Roseburg are about an hour. Portland is 2 hours, too far.
You could also make a friend in the Euge between now and then and maybe they'd let you crash. You have seven months.
I grew up in Eugene and I know my mom had been contemplating renting out her house for the trials. The house is a mile and a half from hayward and any ammenity (grocery stores, restaurants, park, running trails, etc..) all within walking distance. If anyone is interested send me an email.
Is your mom part of the package?

This is, after all, a business.
Nope.
If you don't believe elite sports are a business you got your head in the sand bud.
Why do you think Nike gets their logo all over the place, because they make the best products?
Guess who is hosting the 2012 trials?
Nike=China
Reserve your rooms for 2009, 2011, and 2012 now.
Of course elite sports are a business. I never suggested otherwise.
However, the USATF is not business and that they are concerned with other things than maximizing revenue. They obviously feel that it is worth sacrificing some revenue so that they can create a greater buzz around these trials.
I manage an upscale student housing complex at 1810 Alder Street called The Collegian (www.thecollegian.com). We still have rooms available during that time and it's only a short walk to Hayward Field from our building. If anyone is interested, the details are written below. I don't make the prices, but I think that they're fair.
As a side note, I too think that people are getting pretty greedy around here with trying to squeeze any possible $$ out of thier houses, hotel rooms or yards. The Olympic Trials should be embraced by locals as a chance to show off Eugene's hospitality and ability to put on a great event. I hope that more people in this town can forget about their mediocre cash incentives and focus on making sure that visitors are treated well. $259.99 for a Super 8 makes me ashamed of this town.

Dude, quoting "this is a business" then replying "nope" is probably the definition of suggesting elite sports are not a business.
And the USATF is indeed a business, non-profits need revenues to operate. If Eugene indeed creates a greater buzz, it should translate into increases in revenue and profit over Sacramento. If it doesn't, then "buzz" is worth about as much as you paid to read this post.
"Eugene, its like Manhattan, only much, much worse and not fun!"
the way to stay is with a vacation rental.
I checked HomeAway.com (the biggest one) and Eugene is already booked for the trials... well, look around:

or VRBO (I found at least one home to rent):
