the brits showed an utter lack of class booing the US national anthem at the Hatton fight. I went in rooting for hatton (underdog) and switched when i saw that classless display.
glad mayweather knocked hatton the f*ck out.

It must be tough being you.

Couldn't agree with you more bud. Totally out of order. And I'm half British. It's brainless "oiks" such as those who you mentioned, that let down the majority of of god natured English sports fans eg football supporters.
-
sorry: good natured.
-
idk as an american I don't have too much of a problem with this. It was a boxing match of an american vs. a brit...they can cheer and boo what they like. They're on the other side, why wouldn't they boo us? It's not like we're at war. I doubt any of them actually HATE america or americans. No need to get worked up over it.
-
I'm British. I find it a little embarrassing that some British people did something as classless as boo and jeer during the playing of another country's national anthem.
Most British people are not like that.
I'm glad that most Americans don't say things as classless as "screw the brits" on message boards! If I were American I'm sure that would embarrass me.
Cheers -
It doesn´t surprise me at all that the British fans would do something like this. I say it time and time again: The United States has many allies in this world, but very few friends. I am reminded of Mexicans chanting "Osama" at a soccer game a few years back. The rest of the world has very little respect for us, even if their governments have no choice but to listen to our demands.

When you're talking about such a barbaric sport as boxing, one can hardly cticise spectators for poor sportsmanship.
-
Of course, yes, that's clearly the case. Except, no, wait, infact you're 100% WRONG!
We have lots of friends and lots of people want to be us.
Take your "America is always wrong", "other countries and cultures are better then ours", self-hating crap and stick it!
Those Brits last night and those Mexicans at that soccer game are a disgrace to their countries, both of which are not half the country this one is!
We ain't perfect, but what country is? -
Ireland

Most sports in Europe see this booing.
You must see this as mature democracies not being in awe of their countries omnipiatance and self importance.
A bit like Bush being upset when he had a proper forceful Q from UK press.
Having said this they should have shown respect for other nations culture.
Bit like USA respecting Iraq. -
The sort of people that went out to watch the fight are the type that would boo a national anthem are were on the hole out of order. But dont go tarring all the brits with the same brush I watched a programme last night where some dickhead comedian called the "diceman" was telling sexist, rude, shit jokes as hundreds and thousand of dickhead yanks stood cheering and hell-yeahhing or whatever you do over there. Now thats EMBARASSING
-
You´ve entirely misinterpreted what I wrote. I don´t think that America is always wrong. The truth is that we´re just like any other country: we have some good qualities, some regular qualities, and some terrible qualities. Nobody´s perfect. I was merely lamenting that in this day and age the rest of the world tends to focus on our negative qualities and forgets all of the things that make America great. As I said, we have many allies, but not many friends. Japan comes to mind as one country that is truly our friend, not just our ally. Poland and Panama are others. Israel is more like our little brother and many of the countries in Europe are like those kids on your cross country team who are not as fast as you. I am not self-hating; I love America and was lucky as hell to be born here. But right now we´re having some problems with our team and everybody´s heads are getting a little too hot.

You're right - i was obviously over the line with the 'screw the brits' piece...after the fight we still couldn't believe what we'd seen during our anthem - even the singer (Tyrese) had a total 'I'll be damned' grin on his face as he was finishing wrapping it up.
It should be noted that Mayweather showed he is a superb politician and that he'll move easily into fight promotion when he repeatedly told the british fans he loved them after the fight - the brits cheered for him and there was a tone of shock in their voice. Good stuff - almost as good as his knockout blow.
and thanks for the concern on my blood pressure - everyone on this board is so caring ;) - it's totally normal. xoxo -
Boxing is stupid and so are the British.

Thank you so much for your insightful commentary.

... cast the first stone. We make fun of "O Canada" all the time. I know Americans have booed the French national anthem after their condemnation of the Iraq build up and war in 2002-3.
It's just a song. People put way too much stock into symbols sometimes. If stomping on our flag (the only person who died to bring me my flag was some girl in a sweatshop in China) or making fun of a national anthem (I thought Rosie did a good job) is enough to set Americans off, then where do we get off complaining about Arabs getting pissed about charicatures of Muhammad?
There is time for respect for everything that has come before now to make our country what it is (the good, not the bad - the bad we should learn from, but that would be asking too much of us), and then there are times to be less serious and take the hits in stride. I am certainly not honoring the fallen by watching someone get their brains beat out at a boxing match. Boo all you want. I'm not phased the least.
Just get over it. Then, maybe, we can start focusing on more constructive things and solving the more pressing problems in our lives than just some drunk Brits making fun of a song that more than half of our population doesn't know the words to and can't sing anyway. -

Hear, hear.
Actually, at some point I'd like someone to explain to me why it's appropriate *at all* to play the national anthem--the anthem of a country--before a "sporting" event that involves two men trying to beat each other senseless.
Actually, that just leads into another rant: why play the national anthem before ANY sporting event? I know when it started in the USA, and why--MLB played the anthem before its games in WWII, so as not to look unpatriotic--but have trouble figuring (seriously) what the *national anthem* has to do with guys hitting a ball with a stick.
...or, for that matter, what it has to do with people jumping up and down, running around in circles, and throwing things.
And if you're somehow convinced that the national anthem *should* be played before a track and field meet, shouldn't it be played before the ENTIRE meet? You go to Nationals and the field events have been going on for an hour or more, then get stopped as the anthem is played before the track events begin. What, the field events don't count?

"Japan comes to mind as one country that is truly our friend, not just our ally."
Ha, the same Japan you nuked a couple of times 60 odd years ago???
