Wonder if a 27 page thread on letsrun with the majority of the posts opposed to the change gets any notice at USATF? Apparently the whole deal a couple months ago with the B guys and their water bottles did, but I don't know that this one will.

Glenn Latimer will either be voted out of his position as head of MLDR or he will see the writing on the wall and not run next year in Reno, and then the necessary changes will be made. Stay tuned. I already know who will be running against him. I think that 95% of you will be pleased with the change.

95% on letsrun? The only person that gets those kind of approval ratings here is wejo. Is it him?
All you need is a common man in charge that will listen to his constituents (sp?). Glenn thinks that he creates the rules.

You must be assuming that 95% of us are 2:20 to 2:30 marathoners, since those are probably the only people who are outraged by a 3-minute adjustment to an Olympic trials qualifying time.
Avocado. What is you marathon PR. It seems like you have all the answers. List your PR or stop posting.

You might be surprised that there are some of us out there who just love the sport and are inspired by those 2:20-2:30 types and therefore don't want to see the standard changed. For me personally, it wouldn't matter if the standard was 2:10 or 2:40. I can't run either. However, I don't think lowering the standard to 2:19 does anything positive for the sport or the development of our marathoners, therefore I am opposed to it. If I thought it would make US distance running better or somehow increase exposure for the sport, I might feel different, but I think the standard was good where it was and didn't need an adjustment. Why don't we just do what Canada did and make the standard like 2:12 and then pick a team from the small group of people who run that. That worked real well for the development of their talent now didn't it.

What about the Hansons? They would of had an even larger percentage of the field in the Trials under the 2:19 system. Kevin Hanson said that it was a poor decision that took place for the wrong reasons. These guys are local heroes for what they do for development of marathoners, and they disagree. Why?
Please do not fight Avocado with facts. He has a tendency to ignore them anyway.
I am actually for adjusting the standards as I think that we need to view the trials as more elite. However, Latimer handled this like a chicken shit leader. There should of been a discussion about this in New York so that everyone can be heard. My boyfriend spent $2,000 to go to the trials, he couldn't afford 3 weeks later, spending an additional $2,000 for meetings in Hawaii. I am sure that most of the B athletes were in the same position. Latimer took the road of least resistence because he is a coward.
