Up through #264 was from T&F news, the rest is what I've gathered from IAAF and elsewhere. I haven't updated since Summerside, so there may be more than 296 at this point.

By the way, 2007 has more sub 4's than any other year, even if no one else past 7/21 broke 4 for the first time.

well, I didnt look at the whole list, but there is no way Lukezics first sub 4 was in 2006.

Sure there is a way. He may have run mid/low 3:30s in the 1500 several times before that, but the mile isn't raced that often, unless your name is Alan Webb. Then you find a way to race the mile more than the 1500. The rest of them don't.

If these guys had earlier sub 4's, they'd still be on the list, so yes it is well above 270. They are only listed once.

I'm almost positive that everyone there is a US citizen. I know Lomong might not have been officially a citizen when he ran his time, but he was close to it and had been running here since HS.

Sorry to sound defensive, but this was asked for and I produced, and you still aren't happy. This wouldn't be a problem if T&Fnews actually updated their site, but since they don't, you've got to actually do the work yourself if you want to find an answer (and don't trust my post).

Just to clarify a bit more, if you see a mistake please let me know so I can correct it. I'm human and I make mistakes and there could easily be mistakes above.

bobby curtis broke 4 this year, and i have heard that the clock was messed up for seth summerside and that he actually did not break 4.

Steve Holman ran like a crazy 3:52-53 for his first sub-4 so I think he is the fastest first-timer. Don't give me that Lagat stuff either since his 3:51 on this list was hardly his first. And by the way, I knew the answer to this question before I even looked at the list because I am a genius.

So many things come to mind when i look at this, such as Hunt being of so close in HS (402 indoors) but not actually breaking 4 until 7 years later.

Brian Theriot, i remember he was a 220 sprinter in HS 21 something i think who got converted to the half at USC, not unusual for colleges to bump up their 220 men to the half, pretty common actually, it is amazing he ran a 3:56 in Oslo.

Frank Assuma he and chuck were such amazing 12 year olds, funny Chuck never broke four also hard to believe that Ron Cornell was the first UCLA runner to do it, they had such strong recruits and distance men in the mid-late 70's, and for all the great runners UCI had Steve Scott was the only sub 4 in that era.

Not doubting the list, on the contrary it makes great food for thought

i would love to see a compiled list of the guys in the trials and there marathon pr's. i saw that culp and browne broke it in 96, pretty sweet they are in contention for the marathon now.

Finally, I would like to see the 'expanded' list that includes all of those under 3:42.22, the 4:00.00 equivalent, which might have a bigger list, since it is run more often. In fact, the mile is run more indoors, relatively, and there is a strong representation of indoor marks as a result, even though it is a harder standard to reach.
