Congratulations to Dieter Baumann on his EXCELLENT timing for his retirement!!!!
Here he was, less than 2 months before he had a nice trip to NYC with a good appearance fee.
He then drops out of his last big race at Paris, having run excellent times of sub 28 for 10km and about 13:15 for 5km.
Definitely in sub 2;10 form, assuming that he's done the long training runs.
He then decides to retire just after the biggest EPO bust since the EPO test was developed.
IMHO, what Baumann is doing is protecting his "legacy" and his good-but-slightly-tarnished name. He sure cannot afford another drug bust and the lifetime ban that it would earn....all his endorsement deals and motivational-speaking fees and coaching fees that he could earn in the future would VANISH.
