I would not expect more from the trolls here but I'm a tad disappointed in Malley for inferring so much completely wack bullshit about Deena. I give him credit for not hiding behind a troll screen name but I think he misses the mark here.

I see, and thank you for informing us on how to tell a troll. It apparently is someone who doesnt feel the same way you do, I didnt realize that.
No one is slamming her for being a bad runner or underperforming, just the fact that over $25 and some travel expense she decided to not only run the race, but publicly call out the RD in what, to many here, seems petty, immature, and selfish.
I never said anything about banding together and boycotting her and anything like the sort.
Just pointed out in my opinion it was petty, immature, and selfish. Apparently quite a few others agree with me. Apparently that makes us trolls. At least we are not petty, immature, and selfish trolls that cant handle someone disagreeing with us.

You idiots who are trying to pin this one on Deena are just clueless.

How the hell did she save distance running in the USA?
Did I miss the memo that said no one could run again until a US woman won a medal in the Oly marathon?
Hey, great race by her, but ease up on the hyperbole.
Look back at this forum 2-3 years ago. Not a person here ever thought that a white distance runner would ever beat an African again...let alone a white American distance runner. kennedy was retiring and there was a 2 year wake in this place.
Then Deena won Olympic bronze and things changed. You'll no doubt revise history, but thats how it happened.
Deena was considered a medal contender- her fastest marathon times going into the olympics certainly put her in the top dozen or so(not that many for a marathon). It certainly was a very proud moment for distance running in the US, but to say it saved US distance running seems like a huge stretch.
This is getting put on Deena because it should. Poor baby, no one is going to bow down and bend over backwards so go ahead and pout to your friends and pull out of the race.
As immature as her reaction was, on the bright side , it wasnt as bad as that rap artist complaining about not winning an award.
And from one sentence you are assuming that she was pouting. Amazing. Only on Letsrun.

Yeah lots of American distance runners have been considered olympic medal contenders over the years. She however, actually won one, and when distance running here was at its lowest ebb.
Ask Kara Goucher or Shalane Flanaghan what American runner has given them the confidence to go out and compete at the top level, to mix it up with the Africans.
No shit. The last thing Deena is would be a prima donna needing an escort on a gilded litter. These guys are envious of Deena because she is a woman who can kick their ass straight up and she has accomplished far more in life than they ever will. They are lashing out in their inadequacy and pain, using this forum to make asinine assumptions about Deena Kastor. There is no logical basis to their inferences whatsoever. Even the race director admitted he screwed up.
If I was the race sponsor and the RD turned away an Olympic medalist, he would have some serious explaining to do. What a dumb ass! How could anyone with a modicum of a clue about the sport not recognize the most popular female distance runer in the United States?
If the anti-Deena crowd is unable to comprehend all of the wonderful things Deena has done for the sport, they are truly losers. If they are unable to comprehend the value of having a bronze medalist appear a race event, they have no clue about running in general. It appears they don't serve any other purpose than to tear perfectly good people down, and to spout off nonsensical bullshit on this shithole of a message board.
Just wow.

What wonderful things has she done for the sport? Showing up to events when getting paid boatloads of money isn't wonderful its greed.

Your opinion reveals more about you than it does about Deena. Namely, you are taking a rather harmless five word statement and reading all sorts of things into it that are simply not there.
I think that makes you petty, immature, and selfish. And I think it makes the people who agree with you petty, immature, and selfish.
My call to band together and label Deena a witch rather accurately reflected the mentality on this thread, I thought, especially since most posters didn't even bother to read what Deena had wrote and somehow had got it into their heads that she had slandered the race director.
She was thinking of running a race. She asked the race director to comp her entry. He didn't. She decided it wasn't worthwhile to go. End of story, except on the anonymous letsrun message boards, where it's the story of the year!!! An illustration of her evil and despicable character!!!
Whatever. Keep beating the dead horse until it's super dead. None of it will alter the nature of Deena's true character.
She would have gone for $25 and a room at the super 8. While it may make the RD cheap, it makes her look petty.
Rather than let it go away, she writes about it-thats immature. Later she takes it off her blog. Im taking it someone else agreed with many of us and advised her.
That she expects them to comp her the $25, much less even asks- that makes her look selfish.
The gist of her statement was, they wouldnt comp me, so I am not going. The comp was $25 and a hotel room- yes that makes her look petty, immature, and selfish. I think you can add silly as well.
You dont agree fine. But the fact you instantly call those that disagree with you trolls, idiots, and the like says the most probably about you.
Nope late registration is $30. So see there IS a problem!!!
Hold on there. I knew Harry, and I know he would have said something like, "What the *%$, she should just run the race.".
Harry was a great guy. When I was living in Brooklyn, he'd drive a bunch of us up to Yonkers to train and he'd follow us with water and other supplies in his car.
Another Harry Fan !! I know Joe K. would have taken her money with out a blink.
Yeah, Harry was great. I spent a lot of time talking running (and a lot of other subjects) with him after many a run in Prospect Park. That seems like a lifetime ago.
Seems like miscommunication all around. However any elite, has a right to ask for a comp. The race also has a right to say no. Races sometimes are restricted by the beneficary of the race with comps or may have a no comp policy. It is also ok for a race director in a local race not to be up on the names of elites. It's a local race!
Couple of questions:
If elites just want a comp number from a small local race, do they offer to hang around for the awards or help hand them out?
If elites want more than just a number(hotel, travel, etc.)from a local race, do they offer to do a phone interview or autograph signing after the race?
An elite athlete just showing up and running and leaving really doesn't help a local race out that much. There should be some give and take so all can benefit.
It also has the USA National Master 10K chamipionship... That is not exactly a local race...
Until a real race director and or agent will explain the economics of why elite athletes are wanted at races?
I will try to help.
The RD being a TV news man makes a living getting everyone’s attention and he will use his skills for the race to make sure that he is successful.
If Deena runs the race… The RD being a TV news man will naturally notify the newspapers, TV news and radio news. This should not be that hard because a TV station and a newspaper are already sponsors of the race… He will do this before the race, during the race, and after the race...
If Deena breaks the course record, then he will use that info for the free press for this current race and future races.
That is a lot of current and future benefits for nothing….
If Deena heard about the race then he must have advertised it… Advertising is generally not free.
Now the Paso Robles Inn is also already a sponsor…. If Deena had asked for lodging… They would be able to easily provided that… costing the RD zero…

Harry was a great guy. He told us about Bill (he referred to him as Will) Rodgers long before he was Bill Rodgers. Thought he'd be great. I don't think Rodgers had cracked 2:20 at the time.
What's even more silly, immature and petty is 14 pages of shit about one irrelevant sentence on Kastor's blog.
To Pluleeze... calling Deena greedy because she's made a lot of money via running? Give me a frickin break. Deena is one of the most gracious athletes I have ever met. I have no doubt she has given more of her time to others without getting paid a penny than 90% of the Deena-bashers posting on Letsrun.
This thread is very indicative of the insecurity of distance runners. Without any decency or common sense, we attack like sharks at any opportunity... whether we're making fun of penguins, ultra runners, D3 runners, dyestat readers, and so forth. And we are at our worst when we get a chance to rip on an elite athlete. What a frickin bunch of losers.
