Islets of Langerhans is not thyroid (pancreas is the correct organ) or are they a group of Islands of the Scottish coast.
I think Lagat wins if it is slower than 13:20ish, but Kipchoge probably wins if it goes fast.
Teg looks strong enough to hang with the lead pack until the kicking begins. He has a fair shot at top 6-7 if he runs well.

Good call; I hope that Lagat pulls off the awesome double!
I am rooting for fellow Missourian Teg to finish top 5-6 and you gotta love gutty Goucher (I saw him take 2nd NCAA XC as a frosh and have been a fan ever since!!!!!!)
This is a golden age for American distance running, best I've ever seen depth-wise. There are quality guys from the 800 (Robinson and Symmonds) to the marathon (Ryan Hall and Meb). The steeple needs some work, but overall U.S. distance has taken off. Real nice to see.

I'm guessing Felix Kikwai Kibore may not be a native-born Qatari as well.
lagat wins, mottram second, kipchoge third
As one with a thyroid issue too, his problems stemmed from not enough thyroid hormone. There aren't really flare-ups. Once on medication, it's not a problem.
I worry more about him being a little bigger athlete and surviving the heat. He does have the pair of...guts...to hang with Mottram, at least I hope so.
I think a fast pace will shred the field in this heat/humidity and allow an American to sneak in for a bronze, much like Goucher's wife did.
i don't think goucher's thyroid flared up i just think he started kicking a bit too early. he had a good burst of speed from 700m to go until about 350m to go. after that i just think he was out of gas. if you watch the video he really makes a big move and puts on the gas from 700m to go until 500m to go. i think he was just making sure he would get to the final right there.
If you rank them by 10000 PR, Lagat and Mottram are nowhere near in contention, and given heats- I'd say this puts them at a big disadvantage, especially Lagat, if you consider it relevant data.
not having a 10000m time or a good one, didn't seem to matter much to Kipchoge in '03, or El Guerrouj in '04, or Komen in '97, or Richard Limo in '01, or Niyongabo '96. All winners of recent WC and Oly 5000m finals. so I would say it is NOT relevant data.
But unlike all those guys they are nowhere near the top of the current 5000 list.

If we snipe a medal in the 5k and sweep the 400 this will be quite the year. Looking good for 2008.
As an ex-hurdler, I feel a bit neglected that noone has spoken about Clement's impressive win in the 400h. Once (if?) he learns his steps, he will have a shot at the record.
Regardless, add some more U.S. track success.
stat crazy post. Very good work
what are you talking about? Mottram has one of the fastest times this year. Sure Lagat doesn't have a fast time, but does it really matter? ElG didn't post a mark in '04 until the Olympics, and Niyongabo only ran one to qualify for the 5000m early on and wasn't near the top of the list.

I would love it if Goucher's wife snuck into my bronze
I don´t think she fancies HS kids.
Lagat will be licking his chops if the pace is slowish.
I think Teg has a great shot at top 5 and maybe a bronze. If he timed his peak correctly.
Goucher is tough as hell, and I really hope he runs well. I just don't think he has it in him to medal. There are too many talented runners in the field with more credentials than him.
But if there is one guy I really wish would medal in this 5k, it's Goucher.
