I know, 50 sounds implausible--but you had to be there. The whole team had stopped running, jumping, et cetera, to watch Steve's last quarter, and as he started, his best friend, John Koningh (later a 13:46 Trials 5000m qualifier), half-joking, started a slow, building clap-chant from the ending of the movie "Rollerball," which had just come out: "Jon-a-than...Jon-A-Than!..JON-A-THAN!" (The parallel was perfect; Jonathan E. is the last man standing after the climactic final game.) We all lined the curb and joined the chant as Steve blew by us. There weren't just the required three watches on it--probably sixty people timed him in 50-low.
Soon after that, Coach Miller told a sportswriter that Steve could run with John Walker in the upcoming San Diego indoor meet. The writer blasted Miller in his column for overpressuring Steve. Meet result: Wilson Waigwa first, Steve Scott second, John Walker third. Miller sent the writer a telegram, which said this:
"Sir: You are covered in shit. Len Miller."
OK...this is the stuff legends are made of so I'll just have to go with it. I know Miller's workouts were insane and killed most (all?) of the other athletes he coached. I guess he was the perfect coach for Steve Scott and maybe no one else. It's kind of interesting that a lot of great milers have similar coaching situations. Ryan/ Timmons, Seb Coe/ Peter Coe and now Webb/ Razco (sp).
