Symmonds ran into the classic "come-from-behind" kicker's problem.
That strategy only works if the pack says close to the leader. If the leader gaps the pack then the kicker is too far back to catch him at the end.
He made a beautiful move about 250 meters out where he accelerated into the curve and extended his lead just when Nick was moving around the pack. All he had to do then was hold form the last 100m. Solid racing strategy.
