And we're all clicking on the link to watch, driving the traffic count up and feeding the illusion that he's so great that people will waste time just watching him run in place ... yet, like a car accident, I just can't seem to look away.
I'm waiting for him to bonk. There, I said it.
Just walked out to Times Sq (I work very nearby) and offer these observations:
- The platform is 4 floors above street level. Calls for "harassment" are futile.
- I did not see a huge crowd gathered anywhere gasping in awe or spitting in disdain.
- There is a live close-up camera on DK -- head-and-shoulders -- being projected onto a large DiamondVision screen just above the platform.
- There is a far larger DiamondVision screen showing repeated Accelerade ads, featuring some "real-er" looking runners (models) in "real-er" looking race situations (simulated, track & road) as well as swimmers etc.
He's taking another break ...
What does accelerade do if he can't break the record??? I mean so much for the whole campaign "Don't Fade, Accelerade"
Hes f*cking walking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im writing accelerade
We all need to write Accelerade and let them know that there are a slew of athletes competing in a legitimate athletics competition in Indianapolis this weekend that are more deserving of the title "America's Greatest Runner" than Deano. I have no problem with him pursuing his ridiculous "records," or even trying to inspire or motivate people, but when he fools people who don't know any better into believing that he is some incredible god of an athlete I have to call him a tool. As others have said, all of the truly great American athletes who could deservedly hold the title Dean claims for himself would reject it, but he just revels in it.
Someone needs to hijack his giant screens tonight and broadcast the 10,000 so people can see some legitimate athletes.
holy crap, i cannot believe the collective insecurity exhibited on this message board. i used to be quite the dean hater myself, but seriously, after seeing this thread i'm starting to become a fan just because it would be nice to see all of you tiny people shut the hell up.
(maybe i'm not as threatened by him because i've actually raced--and beaten--Dean, while i'm betting 99% of the posters on this thread actually have zero experience with ultramarathons and are thereby simply engaging in the exceedingly childish activity of ridiculing something they know NOTHING about)
Not ridiculing his ability to run ultras or his athletic talent. I'll admit he's talented.
I'm ridiculing the embellishments and the stunts. 50 marathons in 50 days in 50 states was billed as the greatest athletic achievement ever.
This latest stunt is another one. He does things that are so ridiculous (like that 200 person relay race where he says he's the winner even though he's the only one competing).
Let's see him compete in an actual ultra for a change against competition.
I think two hour long runs are long.. I can't imagine doing 24 hours. I think it's pretty dam impressive. Most people here are just haters. especially Mayeroff.. guy talks about people just looking for attention.. i think he is the most attention-seeking guy around..
i kinda like running wrote:
And yes, every single one of you would jump at the chance to get as much publicity, money, and endorsements as DK. So don't even cop that holier-than-though purist bullshit.
I can tell you in no uncertain terms that I would not. I would even look you straight in the eyes and poke you in the chest while saying that if you said something so stupid to me in person. Your cynicism doesn't affect my integrity. My karma ran over your dogma.

I don't blame this fool, I blame USATF. If he can get 24 hours of live video of himself in Time Square, then why can't USATF promote the sport better.
100% on point. Give DK some props for marketing himself out like a whore. Seriously, WHY can't the USATF put the same kind of money into running that Accerlerade, whom I've never seen a product for in my life, can? Some small nutrition company can rent out the Times Square video screen but USATF can barley get commercials on TV or anything? Ridiculous.
They have "time remaining" listed, but not "total distance." I thought the point was to break the distance record for 24 hours of running?
Dude......it's a freaking huge LCD panel hanging above times sqaure that has to total miles run.
go to camera 1
