With all this talk about the future of the Arkansas Razorback program I feel I should come in here and clear the air on certain issues. I recently visited Houston and while walking through a Courtyard Marriot i ran into Danny Green Sr., father of Danny Green Jr.I know The elder Danny Green from years of Texas State Championships and he was kind enough to put many of these "Hog" rumors to rest. Hetold me that it is untrue these rumors about his son taking the head coaching job of Arkansas.
It is true, however, that Coach McDonnel has coached his last day as a Razorback. He will stay in Fayetteville to coach Cragg, Lincoln, Summerside, and Fountain through next years Olympics. And he will certainly attend the NCAA championships that will be held in the Stadium honoring his name, but a disastrous year of turmoil, from the Brauman incident to the 63rd place NCAA finish, has taken it's toll on the great coach.
Coach Dick Booth, Asst for Jumps, will also retire as he has never wanted to be anything but Assistant at Arkansas. It is well known that Coach McDonnel's last day would be his own. I have heard a rumor that he will stay to help Kozinza Bolombu (Spelling??) go after an NCAA title.
The top candidates for the coaching job are believed to be Scott Simmons, Louis Quitanna (ASU), Jerry Schumacher (Wisconsin), and Jason Vigalante (Tex). With the exception of Vig I see all these as likely candidates. They are all well accomplished coaches who have done well as assistants. They are all looking to move up to a head coaching position. I have a hard time believing that Vig would come to Arkansas because of the issues that Texas has with the Razorbacks.
Coach Mac will be conducting the interviews himself with the also soon-to-retire Frank Boyles to make sure that the program they oversaw and built together will be safe and continue to excell in the future.
Danny Green Sr. did tell me that his son plans to remain with the program under the new coach and will probably find a stronger position their as he will be the connection to the old ways the program was run.
