With all this talk about the future of the Arkansas Razorback program I feel I should come in here and clear the air on certain issues. I recently visited Houston and while walking through a Courtyard Marriot i ran into Danny Green Sr., father of Danny Green Jr.I know The elder Danny Green from years of Texas State Championships and he was kind enough to put many of these "Hog" rumors to rest. Hetold me that it is untrue these rumors about his son taking the head coaching job of Arkansas.
It is true, however, that Coach McDonnel has coached his last day as a Razorback. He will stay in Fayetteville to coach Cragg, Lincoln, Summerside, and Fountain through next years Olympics. And he will certainly attend the NCAA championships that will be held in the Stadium honoring his name, but a disastrous year of turmoil, from the Brauman incident to the 63rd place NCAA finish, has taken it's toll on the great coach.
Coach Dick Booth, Asst for Jumps, will also retire as he has never wanted to be anything but Assistant at Arkansas. It is well known that Coach McDonnel's last day would be his own. I have heard a rumor that he will stay to help Kozinza Bolombu (Spelling??) go after an NCAA title.
The top candidates for the coaching job are believed to be Scott Simmons, Louis Quitanna (ASU), Jerry Schumacher (Wisconsin), and Jason Vigalante (Tex). With the exception of Vig I see all these as likely candidates. They are all well accomplished coaches who have done well as assistants. They are all looking to move up to a head coaching position. I have a hard time believing that Vig would come to Arkansas because of the issues that Texas has with the Razorbacks.
Coach Mac will be conducting the interviews himself with the also soon-to-retire Frank Boyles to make sure that the program they oversaw and built together will be safe and continue to excell in the future.
Danny Green Sr. did tell me that his son plans to remain with the program under the new coach and will probably find a stronger position their as he will be the connection to the old ways the program was run.
Coach Mac to Step Down, Danny Green to remain asst., Potential Coaching List Being Finalized

I have heard similar mumblings

As a former razorback from a time when the team seemed invincible I still don't buy any of this. Coach McDonnell is one of the toughest men I've ever met in my life and I don't see him stepping down any time soon. The man will go out with a bang and retire after the team wins multiple national championships in a year or possibly a triple crown. I've never met anyone in my life before that hated losing more then him. Winning is the only option in this great coach's mind. I wish people would stop writing such nonsense
-
that's part of the reason i believe it...no matter tough this man is he just went from triple crowns to 4 championships in a row without a trophy... he's proved himself... it will never get better than it's been... but it, apparently, can get worse...
-
I think he needs to look in the family for his replacement...whether that person will be the head coach is another matter. Say...someone like Edrick, and then pick a distance Alumni to keep things going in Johns tradition of building tough runners that will give it all for the team. That's just my opinion, in the end, I am sure he will pick the guy that he feels will be right for the job, and who can keep the tradition going.

No one is stepping down. Arkansas to win Indoor Ncaa's this coming year thanks to two similar looking studs from Cal.
-
i'm tellin yall...its Timothy Stevens. he's been pretty sucessfull at the highschool level and is good buddies with coach mac...watch out..this guy is good
-
I hear Dave Welsh from Boise might be a contender...
-
Maybe Coach McDonnel has to step down, to avoid harsh penalties from the ncaa.
-
sucks to hear but i can't say it would surprise me if it were true.
not that it matters what i think but to me scott simmons and louie quintana would be the two best candidates. i imagine that coach mac wants to make sure that a distance coach is heading up the program. he earlier believed that brauman could keep it going with danny as the distance coach but after all of the things that happened he probably just wants to make sure that distance is taken care of.
i'm still waiting to see the official on this though. -
I'm going to go ahead and call BS on this one. And this is coming from a source as high as you can possibly get on this situation (read between the lines)
-
Who are you Frank Broyles?
-
Chat about Chris Huffins. He\'s available. Arkansas is known for indoors and Cal did well at this year\'s NCAA Indoors.
-
Quintana and Simmons the two best candidates? Hmmm...
-
Let us know when that town will get an airport that can handle the NCAA champs. It can\'t now, and we have to drive in from Oklahoma City.
Can\'t you get Red China to build a an international airport in Fayetteville since Red China owns Walmart and half of Northwest Arkansas. -
why does anyone believe this? it is obviously made-up, and these misguided statements have ABSOLUTELY no factual evidence to back them up. this person has obviously just wanted to get a reaction, and i'm positive that john mcdonnell will be around for a bit longer, i.e. at least a few more years.
-
Highly doubt Coach Mac would retire before Arkansas hosts the 2009 Outdoor Ncaa's. The dynasty is not over. More national championships will be won. Maybe not in this upcoming xc season but indoors with an eligible pair of McClary's, a healthy J-Mee Samuels plus others, John McDonnell will have one hell of a team.
"Nothing is more fun then winning" -John McDonnell -
There is an airport just outside of fayetteville that serves all of NW Arkansas. You do have to go through a bit of a cow pasture to get to it but the way NWA is growing it will all run together pretty soon.
I should say that Simmons and Quintana, to me, are two of the best distance coaches anywhere. Of the coaches that are mentioned I'd rather see them leading the hogs than the other two. Are there better candidates for head coach...possibly, but I think that either of those guys would be great for arkansas.
Anyone else that you would suggest? perhaps boo? -
Assistant Coach Kyle White will take the program to the next level.
