I wouldn't say a nobody, but he sure did come out of NOWHERE to upset the heavy favorite Rupp.

an east african beating a yank at 10K is never an upset...perhaps somehwat unexpected, but not an upset
I guess it's easy to criticize someone after their race, but I still feel Rupp ran a very stupid race. He had the fastest time coming in by nearly 30 seconds, and he waits around and does nothing to push the pace. He has never been known for his kick. He's lucky he's so damn aerobically fit and McDougal ran a 5000 the day before. I don't know as if I was even expecting him to come in second off that slow of a pace. What was he thinking?
Rupp sucks!
was this on TV somewhere ore were you there in person?
Yes, he probably should have pushed the pace. They were running 73s in the middle of the race.

Rupp and the gang thought they had it all figure out running back in 10th place(cruising at 71 sec laps) most of the race and thought he would put on a big show at the end....SAD
....anything less then 1st is a huge lost for Ruppy Boy....there must be hundreds of people(runners) asking themselves what the hell happened here....same old shit...that is what!
ps...Mcdougal was no better....Josh is the strangest racer I know......we will see more of the same in the 5k!
both seemed to be guility of looking for a easy way to win...well it cost them!
Now for Josh I can kind of understand why he didn't push the pace since he has the 5000 tomorrow, but Rupp has no excuse.
I really hope those guys don't jog around for 8 laps tomorrow in the 5000. A 4:00 last 1600 is thrilling, but I'd rather see an honest 5000m race from start to finish. I'm betting Brent V will keep it reasonably fast, and he may get some help. Sub 13:30 would be nice.
Anyone have any splits? Where did they start the final surge? Based on that time, it seems unlikely anyone moved for more than the last mile or so... seemed like it was set up perfectly for McDougal coming off of the 5k yesterday...
What's the story behind Songok? Who is coaching at Corpus Christi? Any info?
Impressive win

they're linked from the front page
GALEN RUPP LOST is not an upset...its not an upset to me-if you look at the tactics. If the top athlete isn't the best sprinter in the competition and he runs the distant race slow enough he is putting the race out there for others. Galen ran over 1 minute and 20 seconds slower than his personal best-apparently saving himself for World Trials- and got outkicked by a faster closer in a SLOW race for them!
Vipam, exactly right.
Dumb, dumb and dumber- all three apply to Mr. Rupp tonight. And Mr. McDougal can share in the lack of smarts category as well. Both runners are better than the winner- but the African was SMARTER.
In simple terms, win by Shadrack who trains at sea level tell a lot that Kenyans don’t give a shit. Americans just have too many excuses for their lack of training mentality and getting focused. When Rupp runs 27.30, everybody gets hyped up. Why should I guy run 27 and in less that 2 months’ he faild to win the damm think? Rono (USA) for 1500 and koech(UTEP) is going for 800m. lets go Kenya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is one thing I really dislike about elite level college running. It is clear that Rupp is saving himself for an effort at the US nationals. Why is he then running in a collegiate uniform? He treated this race like it was a prelim...get through it with the minimum effort necessary.
Not that I blame him, but when you get to the point that an NCAA title is so unimportant that you will put it at risk to save up for a professional meet, it is time to go pro.
Tacticles
Sadly I have to agree with you and I really like G. Rupp (upcoming young American distance star) but that is the truth CLEAR and POINT BLANK! Why stay in the NCAA if your not going to contribute maximum effort to win NCAA titles- GO PRO!
Why is everyone on Rupp's ass? If you would have beat Songok rather than lost in the last 50 meters by 0.3 seconds everyone would be praising him for a great race. Distance running is humbling and not always predictable. It may have been the case if the pace was faster he would be running out there alone and doing all the work, which would make it even harder to win. Finishing 2nd in the NCAA 10k is not a failure?? If he is a failure, what about Rohatinsky??? He finishes 8th and he had run 27:55. If you are going to bash on Rupp, then bash on everyone else who did not live up to their seed time in the field.
Actually it's not, because he's clearly overrated... he needs to sack up and learn to win, which he clearly hasn't, before he leaves the NCAA. He's got the elite coach and elite training and elite everything you can have, but he can't win an effing championship to save his life.

I don't disagree with you on your points but I am sure that Rupp doesn't consider himself overrated (even if he is), thus I still think it is obvious that his mind is on the US championships and not on the NCAA.
The NCAA is often really boring this way. Everybody jogs and kicks, the times are usually slow, and the favorites often lose. In one sense, there is a lot of suspense because the race is undecided until the end, but it is kind of like watching Stember and Lunn and the rest of the 1500 scene before Webb go out in 2:10 for the first half of the mile and finish with a 4:03...yawn.
we will all forget when he wins again.....I miss the balls to the wall Pre.
