If Webb does run a 3:45-46 mile that may be enough for a feature article in USATODAY and a outside shot at a sports illustrated cover. This would be a whole new terrority for US mile running. It will send shockwaves throughout the US distance running community. Think of it, no American in 231 years has ever run a mile under 3:47. No human being on this continent has run that fast.
A 3:45 would put Webb among the half dozen fastest milers in history. Is Webb the person to do this for American mile running. Stay tuned......
Even a 3:47 mile would light up this board and even get noticed by the mainstream sports press.
In 1990 many were talking about Joe Falcon setting the new standard for US mile running. He was even ranked number 1 in the world for a few months in the spring of that year. Webb's 3:48 at 22 already puts him at a different level than Falcon. When Webb ran a 3:48 mile what were his times in the spring of that year. Is Webb really 6+ seconds faster than was last Saturday?
I wonder if Webb has been thinking about Scott's record this week. Will this 25 years drought finally come to an end.
I have a feeling if the AR is set it will be done in a fast European race. If it is done at PRE it will be the greatest run ever at that meet.
Ted William .400 batting average will never be broken, but at least a 3:45 mile is possible. Within the next 50 years there will be several Americans reaching this standard.
Folks if an American runs this fast we are talking about an entirely new level for our runners. This isn't merely talented milers like Lunn, Stember, and Jenning running 3:55. We are talking about running ten seconds faster than the best mainstream US milers in the last 15 years. Only the great African milers have reached this level on Mount Olympus.
