It's about time that a sports journalist cut through the BS and post the truth. The athletes quoted in that article aren't the only ones who left because of Coach Huffins.
WOW..I didn't no that was that bad.The guy is worthless..

John Crumpacker is a great sportswriter and passionate fan of all sports Olympic, including Track & Field.
Without his coverage of our beloved sport, no one would even know that it existed here in the Bay Area, in between Olympiads.
He has been covering the Cal Bears for quite some time.

That is why I said keep Tony. Scott was a great pole vaulter, and that's it; Stokke has only jumped 12 feet this year.
You must not be much of a track and field fan if you think that Stokke has only jumped 12 feet. Try 13-03.50 last weekend at the Southern Section Championships, and 13-07 a month prior to that.
She is currently #2 in the State to Tori Anthony who is heading to UCLA and was coached all thru her high school career in Palo Alto by Scott Slover.

I thought that the "cry-baby" comments made by Nate Rolfe ( who is now at Georgia ) in the above article were pretty pathetic, and childish at best. The fact of the matter is that if you can't motivate yourself and find inspiration to compete on a D-1 level from within YOURSELF, then you've got issues. Not your coach.
Throws Coach Jennifer Joyce is sending 4 throwers to NCAA's. She has a pretty solid resume, and a ton of throwers at Cal have been climbing the All-Time list at Cal all season long.
In my opinion, Rolfe needs to grow up.
I hate the way that people play the "blame-game".
Totally pathetic.
"A male thrower can always get a kick in the pants from an older male,'' said hammer thrower Nate Rolfe, who transferred to Georgia last year. "It's harder for someone like Jen to do it who's only a few years older than us, and female."
That quote from Rolfe is pretty pathetic. Implying that she wasn't a good coach because of age and gender?
Still, this doesn't change the fact that Huffins sucks.
You two must obviously not be throwers. How would it be if a football player was unable to be motivated by a 26 year old female coach?
I would imagine that it would be very hard to be coached by a woman who was barely older than I was if I were a thrower. The comments by Rolfe did not seem malicious or childish in any way. I find them quite reasonable given the situation. You must remember that Rolfe is a thrower, and not a distance runner.
He was also saying the Joyce was not a good coach for him, or even the best candidate for the job at the time.
Plus I think many of the throwers going to NCAAs at Cal are women, not men.
Wags / Track Dude has spoken!
Maybe they Cal want's to set up some interiews before/after the NCCA's when coaches would be in the area? ( if they are really doing a nationwide search )
Trackdude, I don't think those quotes from the chron were pathetic or childish. Joyce didn't have a great coaching resume until perhaps this year, and even then it's really only with women, except for a couple of decent guys. Her resume was similar to Huffins': a good athlete, young, charismatic, but with no coaching experience. It's much different to coach male throwers than other track athletes. her resume is besides the point of the thread though. Away from trackdude, I do think that its funny that people would defend a person who just got fired, even though most here seem to feel that huffins was a jerk. obviously someone within the administration felt things were not going well. i'm surprised he stayed as long as he did with his year in/out last place pac10 results and loss of athletes. as the guy in the article said, a few stellar athletes concealed the frustrations of many. Hopefully cal will learn from this mistake and bring in guy that fits in better. or they can just let jeff tedford coach
Don't even get me started on the internal motivation line you put. If we followed that logic, we wouldn't need coaches would we? If a person doesn't believe in his or her coach, then there is no point in even trying. Trust is always key in that relationship.
Remember, according to the article, even a coach was about to leave before the firing.

You obviously need some help in reading comprehension.
No where in my post do I speak about Coach Huffins, let alone "defend" him as you have claimed.
no, no reading comprehension required. no where in mine did i say that you defended him. i said that "people WOULD defend" him right after getting fired, even though most seem to think he's a douche. i know you've been defending him right through his last place team finishes over the years. i still didn't imply you in the post. don't get so angry trackdude! we already all know where you stand on the issue, and what you will say before you say it! we know you will defend cal to the death, but don't worry, huffins is out, and alysia johnson will still win nationals etc etc. i think the future looks brighter

With all due respect, you have very little idea how I feel, or where I stand when it comes to members of the Cal coaching staff aside from my defense of Coach Joyce above.
Tell me, have you ever spent any time with Huffins, or the assistant coaches for that matter?
Have you ever competed as a D-1 of D-2 collegiate athlete?
If so, what were your events?
Who were your coaches?
Trackdude, go back to dyestatcal and bully some more kids there.
Better yet, just go away. You call people out constantly, but you never identify yourself. I know, I am posting anonymously here as well, but I am not calling for anyone's credentials or identity.
Your arguments and comments are ridiculous, and to defend Joyce is hilarious--even if the remarks made by the athletes in the article were bordering on sexist or whiney.
She is not above reproach for her actions. For if you are in the loop at Cal nearly as much as you claim, you would know that some of her decisions have been less than appropriate.
But this is not a Bash Joyce thread. It has now become a Watch Trackdude Backpedal & Make More of a Clown of Himself thread, which are always entertaining.

If that's how you feel, then I guess you wouldn't fault Craddock going back to train with Remy or Klech from training with other non-UCLA coaches, especially after their injury riddled season?
Let's face it, your comment and logic about the coach being at the forefront of all motivation purposes ( exclusive to all other aspects of coaching ) is absurd.
Actually, its pretty funny.

Care to explain what decisions Joyce made that were "less than apppropriate"?
