Let me preface this by saying I consider myself a longer distance guy, half marathon to marathon basically.
I guess because of this I've always thought I should stick to tempo runs for my threshold work but have recently begun using cruise intervals @ threshold pace in my training.
The primary difference I have seen is by doing cruise intervals I'm able to get in a greater distance done at true threshold pace where as once my tempo runs exceed 25 minutes the pace falls slightly below threshold pace until it approaches marathon pace for tempo runs at about 60 minutes.
For the sake of clarity I am using Dr. Daniels definitions for cruise intervals and tempo runs in this post.
Are there any other marathon runners on this board who use cruise intervals significantly in marathon training? What has your experience been with them, benefits, draw-backs?
For me a tempo run would be something between 30 and 60 minutes in length using Dr. Daniels guide to adjust the pace. But if I do cruise intervals I do either 8 x 1600 w 1 min recovery or 4 x 3200 w 2 min recovery and stay on true threshold pace.
If physically we get the most benefit in pushing outward our lactate threshold when we are working at threshold pace then it seems to me cruise intervals may be the most effective at this as in a tempo run I can only get in 4-5 miles at true threshold pace (having to go somewhere between threshold and marathon pace if the tempo run goes to 5-10 miles in length) but I can get in 8 miles (8 x 1600) at true threshold pace in a cruise interval workout. Am I missing anything?
