I'll just stick to insulting him personally when his race performances look good. When I make an attack that has no basis in fact, it can't be refuted.

I certainly am NOT a Rupp basher but......Let's not suck the straw-man off just yet.

What really bothers me though, well not so much, but whenever Gatlin/Bonds do well, everyone jumps all over them and says they do steriods. Now as much as it annoys me when people play this race card, it annoys me just as much when absolutely noone even questions the legitimacy of Rupps time. I hate to sound so skeptical, but the fact that he dropped his pr by so much is an indicator of doping. I'm not saying he's guilty. But you have to question the possibility.

Did anyone else have a significant drop in their PR last night? Do you suspect anyone else?

Or is your skepticism reserved just for Rupp because.... well, because.

Go get 'em doping watchdog! But, please, get all of them, not just the guy you don't like!

Of course you do, I mean he only ran 13:37 as a high schooler and a nearly solo, negative split 28:15 as a freshman. One has to wonder, where does this 27:33 in a competitive field, in perfect conditions come from two years later?

this 2733 didn't come out of nowhere. He wasn't healthy last year so his results weren't too good, but this year he has really picked it up. a 1330 last weekend and a 2835 a few weekends ago that, remember, looked like a peace of cake; he had to slow down for goucher but it was too hard for him to run that slow.

To be honest, I don't really care if he's guilty or not. I'm just surprised that noone mentioned it. I don't have any inside info indicating if he dopes. Frankly, I'm glad I don't know anything. It was a great run, and a 45 second PR drop is HUGE.

A lot of people say they do steroids not because their African American, it's because Gatlin failed a steroid drug test and there are reams of evidence and witnesses that say Barry Bonds took steroids too. If Rupp fails a drug test I will say he is a druggie too, but he hasn't. And by the way, it took him 2 years to drop his pr from a solo race in '05 to yesterday's with lots of pros to draft off of and push him.

And after reading all of these posts I'm actually SLIGHTLY starting to sympathize w/ Barry.

Based on the times he's run here, he should have destroyed NCAA cross. Rupp is VERY good, not taking that away from him, in fact he could be the next great American distance runner, but he hasn't displayed the mental toughness in cross country that he needs in order to compete on the international level

Unrelated, but the race has made me wonder how dirty the sport of pro track and field is? Questioning the legitimacy of a race sucks and takes away from the spirit of the sport. But in light of last years Tour de France Scandal, the Landis drug test, and now Basso, its hard to believe that all of these guys in t&f dropping massive PRs are clean. And I'm not just talkin about Rupp, but everyone.

no one's accusing Rupp of doping after a PR because (unlike Gatlin/Bonds) he hasn't failed a drug test/had others' testifying he took steroids. THAT's why they're scrutinized during success -- not because they're black! sheesh.

Based on that statement, I assume you would say Haile Geresallasie (sp?) was not that great?

I may be displaying my lack of knowledge, but when did Haile G ever seriously compete in World XC?

Rupp, on the other hand, like most of the Oregon team, took NCAA XC pretty seriously and he did ok, but not on par with his other results.

Point being, anything you take on seriously you have to prove yourself in, and I'd say that competing in Footlocker and NCAA XC and not being able to win either win despite much faster track times is indicative of his not competing up to par on the cross country course.
