I witnessed this race at MT SAC from spot about 10 rows up over the finish line area. Start at 3:30 PM, grey skys, constant cold wind about 2+ mps. Jackets, caps, and lots of starbucks coffee cups throughout the stands. In otherwords, a great day for a shakedown run in mid-spring. Crowded field; start in 2 chute lines. Alan Webb on inside; he wound up near the rear when the fields merged after 100m. Solid pace (25.6, 52.40, 1:19.23). The vacationing Australian L Renshaw came out strongly on to the last 100 m straightaway. I thought that Alan Webb would be buried back in 8-th place from that point forward. But, he showed amazing acceleration in moving out wide and then fast forward in the last 60 meters or so. My hunch is that he would have won if the race were 5 m longer; or conversely, if he had stepped outside a second sooner. He certainly looked quite fit at the finish. Finishing times were L Renshaw 1:47.06, D Solomon of USC 1:47.19 , A Webb 1:47.32. Based upon this early season race, my prediction is that A Webb will have an excellent season ahead of him.
