In a podcast interview that was published today, Adam Goucher said that it is highly probably that he will in fact make his marathon debut this fall.
BUT HE ALSO talked about how the Olympic Trials may NOT be the best race for him to debut in and how "he always saw himself doing it [his marathon debut]" at the NYC Marathon. He does also mention that Chicago and Boston are possibilities, but from his statements - it seems that he may be leaning towards ING NYC.
What do you guys think? Is he gonna choose the NYC marathon over the trials (also in NY, but the day before) because he is looking to seriously cash in on his debut???
Goucher hints that he wil debut @ NYC Marathon instead of Olympic Trials!

How do you get into the Olympic trials without a qualifier? Do they have equivalents for 10k track?
Probably a dumb question but this is the place for them. -

Yes. -
28:40?

I think it's a good move on his part.
ING NY will make him more money, avoid the multiple-lap course of the trials in central part and from what he said - it seems like it would be motivating bc running the marathon sounds like a dream for him. -
i believe so

Wow, I honestly did not think that Goucher would try a marathon. I'm sure he can run a solid time, but I think it's a bit long for him. I can't recall him running road races of any length- I wonder what he'll think of the half, etc.

Anyone have RWTB on hand? He did a few crazy long runs at CU. I vaguely remember 23 miles avg 5:30s on Mags.

I think it was 22 miles in 2 hours. (at altitude/in trainers)
He ran sub-5:20 for his 21st mile before slowing down a little bit. -
It was not on Mags, it was at the Boulder Reservoir and Certai Death Canal run. Big difference. No one has ever broken 5:45-50 per mile on Mags for 17 miles let alone 20 miles. Sub-6:00 is hauling ass up there.

Did I read a different book then everyone else? 20 miles, at the Res, in 1:58. Chapter title is "Oh, Goucher!" Go look it up. I'm at work.

Very impressive, for sure. A couple of key things, though: he did that when he was 22. As the previous poster mentioned, he does not have a history of doing any longer road races (even 15ks). It will be interesting to see, for sure. However, if guys like Todd Williams struggled with it (after dominating at 10k and 15k for years), I find it hard to believe that Goucher is going to fall in love with the distance. Especially after being a 5k guy his whole life.
Good luck to him, though- the more guys doing it, the better. -
I agree - I think he will likely struggle with the distance. But - we'll see what happens.
I think he should really do the Trials instead of ING NYC. I know the trials' course in central park is not the fastest - but it sure is faster than ING NYC ... damn bridges -
well if he may not like it and not run again, why run the Trials, take the payday from ING/NYRR which will be lacking US runners? If he doesn't like it..he can go back to his normal race schedule in the spring

That's like a 2:26 to 2:27 Marathon. I think that would be a disappointment for Goucher. -
Yes, but can he run 26.2 miles in 2 hours and 3 minutes?

Does anyone really think that the NYRR, which has devoted so much money and energy to getting these Trials and getting every top American runner who's even done a 5k to come to them, is going to give Goucher a huge payday for SKIPPING the trials and running the regular marathon the next day? Do you REALLY think that?
