Interesting to see this is the first 'mass participation' marathon (in Tokyo?, Japan?). What exactly does that mean? Did citizen/recreational runners need to leave the country to run a marathon before? I know the Honelulu Marathon is popular with the Japanese.
At the NYC Marathon, The Tokyo Marathon was there with available slots for this race -- a marathon vacation. Any thoughts on this as a destination marathon?
Thanks.
I think what they mean is that this is the first marathon where the common folk could actually run together with the elite in such a large number. They're usually pretty strict here with marathons for elite runners (like Fukuoka, Beppu-Oita and the old Tokyo Marathon) and for recreational runners (Ibigawa and Kakegawa are two in my area that attract a few thousand non-elite runners)... although they've lowered the standards for getting into Fukuoka to around what the old Boston standards were.
As for whether Tokyo would serve as a "vacation" marathon... if you've never been to Japan, it might be cool to come out, but bring LOTS (x5) of M-O-N-E-Y!
