Had some trouble on my workout today. Planned workout was 8x800 at VO2max pace (2:50) with 400 meter recovery jog (about 1:50-1:55). Ended up only doing 6 repeats, with splits of: 2:39, 2:43, 2:47, 2:49, 2:50, 2:54. Obviously I started off too fast the first 2 and that hurt some. The biggest problem was the weather: 87 degrees, 65% humidity, 95 degree heat index, very sunny.
What I'm wondering is whether or not it was the best decision to cut the workout short. I could have struggled through 2 more intervals, but would have had trouble keeping them much under 3:00. This is considerably slower than my goal pace. This pace would put me in that "no man's land" between T-pace and I-pace that Jack Daniels mentions in his book. Since the goal of the workout was to run I-pace, I would be running too slow to gain maximum benefit for VO2max improvement. I have been doing one LT tempo run per week for about the last 8-10 weeks, but this was my first workout at I-pace. I don't think I was physically drained due to overtraining, I think it was the weather.
Anyway, my question is: When, if ever, is it OK to cut a workout short? I pride myself on having the "toughness" to always finish my workouts, but I was completely beaten down today. Would it have been better to fight through 2 more intervals at slower than goal pace or was it best to just cut it short like I did? If there are any coaches out there, what criteria do you use to determine when it is best to pull a runner off the track early during a workout?
